Ohio House Speaker Charles F. Kurfess said the county based graduated income tax has at best a 50 percent chance of passage after a mixed caucus reaction. He outlined a companion bill to ease adoption of five permissive taxes by county commissioners, including varying real estate, sales and hotel taxes, with voter repeal and ballot options.

Lawton a 50 year old Columbus office worker who has never held political office announced his bid for the 1970 Republican nomination for governor He positions himself as a constructive Republican proposing low cost practical programs tackling welfare crime education vocational training and taxes He would cut the governor salary from 50000 to 10000 and would require able bodied welfare recipients to work through a five stage program He cites support for working people and criticizes taxes inflation graft and urban decay.

The Logan school board met last night to authorize member Carl Risch to sign checks during the absence of clerk Joy Boling who is hospitalized at Lancaster Fairfield Hospital for treatment of an illness.

Merle Ellinger Appointed to S W School Board

The Starr Washington school board appointed Merle Ellinger of Logan Route 3 to fill the vacancy created by James Hixenbaugh’s resignation. Ellinger’s term runs until January 1. Hixenbaugh left to run for township trustee in the November election. The board also hired Wilbur McDaniel and Ralph Cherry as substitute bus drivers and Juanita Dutcher as substitute cook.

Gambrel Appointed To Hocking County Relief Commission

Charles Gambrel of 510 W Second St has been named to the Hocking County Soldiers Relief Commission for a two year term, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Albert Ledford last week. Gambrel is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Night Assault Kills 14 Americans in Vietnam Bases

North Vietnamese forces attacked three U S bases near Da Nang during the night, killing 14 Americans and wounding 68, with 76 enemy dead reported. In the heaviest strike, sappers breached a hill artillery base 30 miles south of Da Nang, causing close combat losses. U S losses totaled one dead and seven wounded.

Peking charged that Soviet troops tanks and armored cars crossed into Yumin County Sinkiang killing a herder and kidnapping a herdsman. The Ohio Department of Highways details three part paving work in Logan and nearby state parks including 1.01 miles on former Rt 33 in Logan, 1.0 mile on Rt 93 near Kachelmacher Park, and 6.88 miles on Rt 180 to Laurelville with completion by Oct 15. Judge Orders Closing Briefs To Be Written
