State Completes Its Case in Sappington Trial

The state rested its case at 11 30 a m in the trial of John Sappington former administrator of Hocking Valley Community Hospital He is charged with conspiracy to defraud the hospital a political subdivision of Hocking County Ralph Voelker state examiner testified auditing hospital records in 1967 His testimony matched earlier trials of co conspirators Sterling Lewis and Libby Lewis with Sappington The second day opened after a 20 minute attorney conference before Judge Robert G Tague in New Lexington Ohio.

Patman attacks bank conspiracy demanding action

Rep Wright Patman chairman of the House Banking Committee urged President Nixon to withdraw government deposits from banks that raised their prime rate to 8 percent He warned the move could push the U S into a severe recession and called for antitrust action against involved banks He also urged the Fed to cut discount privileges. Ohio officials said a rate rise costs the state money by raising borrowing costs for improvement bonds and threaten project deferrals amid high rates.

Ucker Dairy May Face State Action

Logan-Hocking County health board authorized Sanitarium David Mingus to contact Ohio Department of Health and state attorney general about possible action against Ucker Bros Dairy. Milk is produced and sold while license suspended for high bacterial counts. Board also addressed solid waste disposal and approved PhonoCardioScan screening for county schools next year.

Viet Cong Announces Revolutionary South Vietnam Government

The Viet Cong disclosed at midnight on Radio Hanoi the creation of a two part revolutionary government for South Vietnam. It says an administrative body will be backed by a council of advisors and was formed over the weekend by 88 representatives from all sections of South Vietnam.

Allied Probes Find Enemy Fortifications

Nearly 400 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers were killed in heavy ground fighting Monday after a brief lull. The 5th Marine Regiment reported 186 enemy dead in a two day battle near Da Nang, with 137 killed in four other clashes involving American forces. American losses were 18 killed and 95 wounded. six Saigon government troops were killed and 16 wounded.

Sunday Liquor Sale Vote Seen In Ohio Senate

The sponsor predicts a tight vote in the Ohio Senate on Sunday liquor sales 1 p.m. to midnight locally, with Rep. Richard R. Hollington Jr. stating about 48 votes at last count and hoping for 50 to pass. The bill allows local option sales and would exclude dry areas. Voters may choose permitting all current permit holders or limiting to hotels with 50 percent food service.
