35 Percent Retail Increase in Hocking County 1948 to 1954

Census figures show total county retail sales rose from 12.696 million in 1948 across 244 stores to 17.201 million in 1954 with 215 stores. Logan dominates with 135 stores and 13.845 million in 1954 sales, employing 622 of 737 county workers and yielding a 1.430 million payroll.

Courthouse and city offices close for Christmas. churches plan services. Cooties present gifts to 150 patients at the Chillicothe Veterans Hospital.

Shopper's Lost Billfold Returned to Athens Widow

An elderly Athens widow who lost 100 dollars on a Christmas shopping trip had her billfold with the money returned. Police said Mrs Goldie Moore collected it at police headquarters after reporting the loss. The billfold was turned in by Russell Milliken of Marietta a former East Elementary principal now serving as superintendent of Washington County schools.
