The State's Division of Zoology notes Pennsylvania rapidly advances as a fruit producing state with all 67 counties adapted to profitable apple growing. Experts say success hinges on site choice, proper varieties, tree care including planting, pruning, spraying, fertilizing, cultivating, thinning, picking, packing, and pest control. The 1,200 model orchards show practical lessons for beginners and advanced growers as dormant spraying ends and spring spraying plans are prepared.

SOME TIMBER FIGURES

Last year over 55,900,000,000 feet of timber were cut in the United States. More than 18,000 acres of timber are cut every working day. At the present rate the desirable timber will be exhausted in 25 to 85 years. For a year of Chicago Tribune paper over 2,000 acres are required. We consume 7,300,000 cubic feet of cedar annually for lead pencils. Timber consumption grows faster than population. Panama Canal may cut freight costs. There is no other great staple as indispensable to civilization as timber, while supply diminishes.
