A weekly column lists legal events commenced next week and local notices. It notes the paper mill reopening after repairs, July Fourth committee meeting, local agricultural activity, births, anniversaries, travel, and pensions, with several residents returning from California and others preparing bids for Panama bonds.
John Sanders, an Indian boy, recently returned to Lititz from New Jersey where he worked on a farm after leaving Carlisle Indian School. He is well liked here and remains a faithful worker trusted by friends, despite mosquitoes and his former employer. The piece also covers Lititz High School commencement plans with Dr Gardiner delivering the address, a 20 piece student orchestra, and various events leading to graduation on May 24.
Lititz Lodge No 1050 S O O F sent Harry B Workman to represent at the Grand Lodge annual meeting in Wilkes-Barre. Lititz Lodge 258 Knights of Pythias to initiate three tonight. A O K of M C No 19 to confer third degree on four Saturday. Masons Fasnacht Eby Light to Harrisburg for thirty second degree. Fulton Castle K G E Lancaster degree team initiated three more Knights in Lititz. Banquet followed with ice cream and lemonade. Eugene W Yerger, 15, died at home on Orange Street Warwick from articular rheumatism after illness beginning May 9. Survived by parents and many siblings. Funeral at St Pauls Lutheran with Rev Clarke presiding. Interment Machpelah. Hearers from St Pauls Sunday School included four boys.
Mrs Louisa Sheetz aged about 70 dies at United Zion Home Pleasant View after long illness of consumption. Widow of Elias Sheetz former Pennville and Millway hotel operator she leaves two children Alice married to Jacob Martin and Monroe Sheetz. Funeral held Tuesday at White Oak Church with Rev J A Heitler.
Jacob Seitzinger 73 with Mennonite faith died Wednesday evening at his Lime Rock residence from a stroke two weeks earlier. Survived by second wife Katie Kreider and one daughter, plus three children from the first marriage. Funeral at his home then Longenecker's meeting house with interment at the adjoining cemetery. Hershey & Gibbel sold two town properties, John Sesseman’s corner dwelling to J C Felker for 2500, and Israel G Erb home to Robert F Russell for 5500 with move planned in fall.
Lancaster county young men are invited to enter a patriotic oratorical contest during the Independence day celebration at Lititz Springs. Participants must be at least ten years old and speeches from early republic founders will be chosen. Prizes are ten and five dollars. Judges will be impartial. Entries to Mrs. G. I. Hepp in Lititz.
Ephraim Herr of West Lemon Street resisted a state quarantine placard placed on his home for his daughter’s typhoid fever. He was jailed after refusing bail, with a hearing set for Monday. The incident follows a prior similar refusal last year, and a large Alaska refrigerator was installed at H Bollinger’s Broad Street shop.
A series of brief notices records local people traveling. Mrs H P Fry spent days in Philadelphia. Mr and Mrs M H Shenk and son visited Willow Street. the Spicklers traveled to Akron. many families visited relatives in Warwick, Lancaster, Manheim, Bethlehem, and beyond. Several weddings, funerals, and visits are noted, with dates ranging over a recent weekend to a few weeks. Notable events include the wedding of Rev Ka Klick and Henrietta S Coover at Myerstown and European wedding trip for the newlyweds.
Edwin R. Leeking of Milhway and Ella N. Rettew of Rothsville wed at the bride’s parents’ home on a Sunday morning. Rev. J. W. Bittner officiated with a ring ceremony in the presence of relatives. The groom works for Standard Oil and plans to move to Massachusetts next week with his wife.
John H. Bausman proprietor of the Kissel Hill Hotel was seriously hurt when a runaway horse attached to a buggy plunged forward after he tried to catch it. He suffered a two inch cheek cut, temple wounds, facial bruises, and other injuries, with stitches applied by Dr. Yoder. The horse owner fled the scene and has not been identified.
Former townsman Harry C. McCloud has built a large banana business in Philadelphia. Last week he sold 6200 bunches, with each bunch containing 100 to 200 bananas, averaging about 140 bananas per bunch, totaling roughly 882,000 bananas.
Construction begins on a concrete foundation about eight inches above ground for a pavilion measuring 40 by 74 feet. The structure will sit on the south side of the creek near the north pavilion and will use fan bark instead of a boarded floor.
The Lititz Band thanks donors who funded a new uniform outfit via a donations drive. Five summer concerts will be held starting Decoration Day May 30 at Springs Music Pavilion, with extra collections at each event to complete funding. Uniforms from Henderson Ames Co. include a black tailored suit with gold braid and white duck caps with interchangeable covers.
