Lives saved by wireless in Merida disaster

Wireless telegraphy played a heroic role when the Ward Line steamer Merida sank after a collision with the Admiral Farragut off the Virginia Capes. Despite heavy damage to both ships and 315 passengers aboard, all were saved with no loss of life. Operator Leech revived the signal after failure, guiding救 aid from the Blamilton to Norfolk. Passenger B A Hadsell recounts the peril and the vast losses from the voyage, including $8,000,000 in potential valuables, while most baggage sank with the ship. The Merida likely cannot be raised.
