Martin Muth spoke at the Rotary luncheon on Tuesday. Community updates mention poppy sales by the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, Memorial Day on May 30, real estate moves, illness, and local happenings including a Lititz Male Chorus event, school activities, animal care, and a new partridge nesting cycle.
Thomas Hammel of Lititz aged 66 buys a Connecticut farm to raise muskrats foxes and chickens. He has trapped thousands of muskrats and formerly worked as a ranchman though his real trade is piano tuning. His wife will accompany him. The land features a stream to be dammed for fur farming.
The Moravian church yard tulip beds are in full bloom. Caretakers Eugene Kreider and his wife have long nurtured the beds attracting much attention for their size and beauty.
All seniors from first class high schools and colleges must take special exams on May 7 sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation. Tests cover English, history, mathematics, science, and languages to study secondary and higher education links. The Girls' Glee Club concert is tonight at eight. The Boys' Varsity basketball team and Coach J G Starr held a banquet at Chef's Place last Friday.
The ladies' Auxiliary of the American Legion hosted a public card party last Wednesday evening drawing about thirty two attendees. Prizes at 500 were won by Ann Hillard Lancaster, Mrs Valentine Brotst Lititz, Mrs Krick Neffsville, Norman Habecker Lititz, David Shots Lancaster, Td Hall, John Brawford and Paul Spangler Lititz. Refreshments were sold and about fifteen dollars was cleared.
A two and a half story frame house on Broad street Lititz was sold Saturday afternoon at public sale to David Habecker for 4450. The Fulton National Bank as executor of Joseph Simmers will of Lititz offered the property. Sale held on the premises.
Officers of the Risser family met at Harry L. Risser home near Clay last Friday to arrange the May 30 reunion at that residence. A committee meeting is set for May 16 with Abner Risser serving as president.
Lititz prepares a tabernacle evangelistic meeting starting the last Sunday in October and lasting five weeks. A committee of ministers and laymen met last Thursday and decided to engage the Neighbor Evangelists who preached successfully at Manheim and Ephrata this year. The project will require erecting a tabernacle and the site will be chosen by a committee.
Sixty Odd Fellows attended a church service at St Luke's Reformed Church. Rev Raczer delivered a sermon from Philippians 3 8 14 urging forgetting what lies behind and pressing toward the goal. Junior and Odd Fellows choirs contributed special selections.
Farmers invest in modern implements as tobacco prices rise, ending years of cautious buying. Low returns previously delayed purchases, but the current season sees widespread replacement of older equipment with improved machinery.
Railroad workers report pheasant nests along tracks while Harrisburg debates permit to shoot hens due to crop damage. The species has become the era’s most successful game in the area.
Lime Rock is no longer a railroad stop as Reading Railroad discontinues service. The flag stop ceased on Sunday with no tickets sold for the destination and the train operation was stopped at a loss to the company.
P. W. Baker and W. M. Pfantz of Baker & Pfantz hosted an annual supper for twenty winter workers in the tobacco warehouse on Centre street. The event, held Monday evening, featured an excellent assortment of food laid out in the basement.

A Lititz boy on the U S S Lexington shared a paper from the ship noting the battleship’s dimensions seven million rivets 1400 tons and 180000 horsepower. The piece also mentions a Springfield Kentucky catfish with six unborn chicks in its stomach inspiring a cautionary tale.
There are more women auto drivers on the road than ever before. Ten or more years ago a woman driver was a novelty and men debated whether they would prove as efficient as male drivers. The argument that a woman couldn't keep her head in a pinch is no longer considered.
Slarry Irvin took over Burkholder's restaurant on Tuesday morning. Irvin is experienced in the business and has worked in various restaurant roles in Reading. He moved to the area with his family from Ephrata.
Miss Anna K Miller entertained the Delphian Club on Friday evening with a Tennyson topic. Readings were given by Mrs Frank Dengate Miss Miller Mrs Florence Gibbel Mrs Norman Badorf and Miss Mary Hichener. The next meeting will be Friday May 11 at Mrs Radorfs home.
A new blue rock trap at Lititz Gun Club near the water works will be tested Saturday afternoon in a contest between Frank Spickler and Howard Stohler. The device is an improvement over the old trap and can be regulated to throw four targets up to sixty yards. betting on the event is about even amid controversy.
The Sunbeam class of St Pauls Lutheran Sunday School held a church basement social Tuesday evening for parents and friends. Miss Bertha Bachman led the program with vocal solos by Mrs Norman Brubaker and Mrs W R Sammett, a violin solo by Rev W R Sammel, readings by Maude Bearinger, and numbers by the Ephrata Male Quartette. Talks by Mrs Sara Jenkins Rev A Weichsel Dr L N Moyer and Rev W R Sammel followed. Mrs Emme Tong supervised refreshments as about sixty attended.
Lititz Fire Company plans to take part in the New Holland parade on June 2. The Lititz High School Band will accompany the marchers. The last meeting named the annual festival committee. An electric siren was purchased on trial for the fire apparatus as a future precaution. The chorus that performed in January will be entertained soon.
Thirty two family reunions and picnics are booked at Springs Park for the coming season. Most events involve Lancaster Sunday Schools with two from Reading. The County Maltas return and the native Virginians hold a first time reunion at the park.
The Lititz Reformed church women and friends made a 460 name friendship quilt for the Orphans Home at Womelsdorf. It will be shown in Spacht's Furniture window and netted ten cents per name.
Four year old Andrew Grube Jr. was hit by an automobile while running from a Buckwalter farm barnyard toward his grandmother. Charles Hammer swerved to avoid him and knocked him into a gutter. Hammer and the father took the boy to Dr. D C Martin, who reduced the fracture and then sent him to Lancaster General Hospital.
High School boys practice baseball with no set schedule this year. Expected games against Rothsville and Manheim High, enough to keep interest before term end. Basketball and football funding takes priority. pitching and catching material is scarce. Coaches J. G. Starr and A. R. Bloomquist lead the team.
A street corner sign lists Lancaster 7 miles Neffsville 3 Brickerville 5 Lebanon 18, noting old Lancaster Neffsville distance was a mile longer. It notes boundary changes with Lititz reducing the distance and imagines air travel shrinking times to Lancaster in 2 minutes and Lebanon in 5 minutes.
Numerous families and individuals from Lancaster York Nazareth Philadelphia Baltimore Sarasota and beyond spent weekends with relatives in Lititz and Abbottstown York County. notables include Rev W R K Sammel aiding Lutheran church organ dedication and a large Kissinger family birthday gathering with 41 relatives and a feast.
The Amicus Club was entertained at Miss Mary Sturgis home Tuesday evening. Present were Miss Viola Bisker, Miss Amelia Wagner, Miss Nina Grosh, Mrs. Victor Wagner and Miss Irene Erb. Refreshments were served, pink decorations honored Miss Viola Bisker's birthday. The next meeting is set for May 15 at Miss Viola Bisker home.
Harry Furrow of Robertsdale visited Frank Reed on Sunday. Furrow has camped near the Lebanon pumping station for years and will be there again next month.
