Community events note John G Carpenter, 77 yesterday, and a Friday watch charm found on South Broad Street. Trout records at Furnace Hills. Thursday half holidays begin town stores, Amer’s Hardware open all month. Moravian Church lovefeast and Mother’s Day plans noted with tulip beds and local civic reports.
Abe Buzzard, the Welsh Mountain desperado, is to be released from the Eastern Penitentiary today after two years more in custody. Once an evangelist on Lititz Ridge, he reportedly carried a Bible and revolutionized plans to reform, though past terms included chicken theft and home robberies. Prison officials remain reserved about his future, noting prior reform promises that faltered after release.
Lititz Manager Kreider drills a strong lineup for a Saturday 3 PM county league opener against the Denver team. Starting for Lititz are Hackman catcher, Hunter pitcher, Kingsley first base, Mearig second, Dichm shortstop captain, Shoemaker third, Weiss left, Spickler center, Walter Enck right, with Young catcher Will Enck Hershey and additional arms in reserve. Admission 35 cents. Nelson Mearig serves as treasurer.
The town gears up as asparagus season runs March 15 through June 15 with 1,500 workers on Baldwin Island in the San Joaquin River. Yoorman Company of California owns the largest plantation, harvesting shoots six inches below soil, washing, canning, and shipping about 650 cars yearly. The beachhead soil, tides, and 7000 acres on the island fuel a crop valued over half a million dollars, aiming to keep Baldwin Island the world’s asparagus center.
A white fronted goose or speckled belly, newly integrated with a flock at the Rothsville mill dam along Lititz Creek, nestles at a stable after a brief welcome and shows fierce protectiveness. A robin entangled in a string near N D Sturgis’ pretzel bakery is freed, then resumes building in a new spot. A Lititz Record letter recounts a doctor patient tale: a shoemaker with advanced diabetes improves after he begins eating sour kraut, while a tailor who tried the same died. The note ends with a sharp caution that sour kraut helped the shoemaker but not the tailor.
At the United Evangelical Conference of East Pennsylvania in Reading Rev S A Heisey of Akron was assigned to the Lititz charge. Pastors Imboden and Heisey swap posts. several other ministerial moves and first assignments are listed along with church figures and fundraising totals. A public sale on the Sammet farm near Millport and Rothsville was withdrawn at 2150 dollars as a large turnout watched.
L N Moyer plans to convert the old Springs National bank building into a drug store. Deeds trace the 1880 construction by Seaber and Grube for the Lititz National Bank. Mortar was cured for three months and bricks soaked in water to ensure adhesion. The vault, made by Farriell Co, was removed and sold to Stiffel Freeman Safe Co. it held fifteen tons of steel.
N S Myers buys additional ground between Machpelah cemetery and Wayne Fahnestock facing South Broad street to build a modern mansion with a private driveway. Work may begin this week as part of a growing South Broad Street housing block. remaining houses sell quickly with favorable terms. Myers runs a busy real estate and legal office at 15 17 South Cedar Street and is well known across adjacent counties.
Marl F. Eshleman, a furniture repairman formerly of New Holland, will locate on Centre Street Lititz and open for business today. He will do all kinds of furniture repair and offer special work made to order. Also note Mondays are double stamp days at Ritchie's Candy Shop.
Protective Home Circle No 272 FP H C urges members to attend Friday meeting honoring departed sister Emma Groff. Three new members to be obligated and other business to be acted upon. From May, meetings move to the first and third Fridays each month.
Lititz residents toured Furnace Hills on a sunny Sunday seeking trailing arbutus now in prime bloom. Weather aided outdoors with spring flowers scarce after two dry seasons, though wet conditions revived arbutus growth. Flowers with pink and white clusters and emerald leaves tempt nature lovers, many uprooting plants.
John Getz and Lester Shhreiner, both about six, narrowly escaped serious burns Tuesday when straw near a coop caught fire. They lit matches outside, then rushed through a burning straw pile blocking the doorway. Both boys had minor facial blistering. the blaze was stopped with water. The incident occurred behind Emanuel G. Witwer’s home on South Cedar Street. Shreiner is Witwer’s grandson and Getz resided nearby.
The Warwick Township High School Alumnae will host an evening of entertainment at the Rothsville High School Auditorium on Saturday night May 10 at eight o'clock. The program features vocal and instrumental solos and duets, recitations, and a play titled Why Not Jim. The cast includes Mrs. Gordon Carrie Kieffer Paula Harmon Gladys Weidler Edna Frazer Mildred Yorger Vivian Gordon Isabell Groff Gertude Price Mary Hess Alice Irene Butzer Alec Frazer Donner Brenner Charles Ramsay Eugene Mohn James Barry Amos Verger. Tickets may be reserved by calling Earl Stauffer or Alfred Couple.
The oyster season closes for four months from April 80 to September 1 under an unwritten rule. No law bans selling oysters in summer, though bi valves drop in demand with warm weather. Salt oysters may be found in cities. Salsify, an oyster plant, is grown locally and prized for its oyster like flavor.
The Warwick Township High School Alumni Association held its annual banquet and reception in the Rothsvile High School auditorium on Saturday evening. About seventy five members and teachers attended. Entertainment included dancing, cards, and games with Hackman’s Orchestra providing music.
A roundup of visits and travels around Lititz includes Mrs. W. H. Buch and relatives in Reading, the Treish family from Reamstown with Garman relatives, Ethel Sturgis in Reading, Elam Kline and wife from Stevens, and Belle Brink visiting her mother at the Moravian Home. Also noted are trips to Gettysburg, nurse gradua tion news for Susan Ruth Phillipps, and local residents like Elmer Kauffman and the Rhen family visiting Lititz with social ties to the S. K. Miller household.
Catherine Smith of South Spruce Street turns ninety today while in good health though slightly frail. She is a Moravian church member for 74 years, mother of eight with seven living, including George of Philadelphia William of Monroe and Harry of Lititz Charles of Reading Katie and Martha at home. There are 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. her husband died about forty years ago.
