Raise Beans and Win the War
Farmers are urged to plant late beans on cut hay land as they outperform early plantings. The navy or soup bean is a leading variety, easy to grow, and helps soil, not deplete it. Beans supply war needs, feeding troops in the U S and abroad, with rising prices since 1915. Convert poor corn cells to bean patches to stretch supplies.

The board of viewers weighs whether the Lancaster and Lititz turnpike should become free. Testimony shows freeing the road may not benefit the public, with many arguing the county must buy and maintain it. Magistrate Magee calls the pike "reasonable" while Brinton notes improvements would make it a fine road for travelers. A local wager predicts the toll-free plan will not pass.
