Wild turkeys and pigeons in 19th century Lancaster region
In winter 1891 three wild turkeys were found in Black Swamp near Elizabethtown and York Haven, decoyed, trapped, one gobbler mounted in Hershey area, other two shot by 1895. The note links to a tragic near-extinction tale of passenger pigeons, once abundant across the county, with a Moravian archive entry from March 26, 1780 describing pigeons in Easter sunrise.
