German family learns to get ahead through thrift and hard work
The piece highlights German immigrants Adolph Merkel and his wife who arrived with little English and few resources. Through steady work as a cabinet maker and carpenter, thrift, and persistent effort they bought a Second Avenue lot, built a double house, and progressed to owning a car and home, illustrating successful adaptation in Lititz.

The region shows low prices for driving horses due to slick roads and fear of travel. A fast pacing horse fetched 175 at a sale three years ago, then sold for 380 weeks later. A Wititz man got under 2 dollars for a 25 dollar work horse, others swap or euthanize rather than feed. Nearby talk shifts to a proposed connect between Chi and Lititz, with hopes for a faster mail route. Rev. Crosland praised a memorabilia lecture covering 1925 and world chronology. A hotel near Lititz installed a seven hundred dollar radio with a loud speaker, drawing evenings crowds including loyal locals who listen quietly to sermons, even from the barroom.
