History of game in Lancaster County continues
In the Furnace Hills region of Elizabeth and Clay Townships a trove of early German names marks a long natural deer range. Deer antlers at a Hammier Creek farm hint at once common venison and a scarce deer era. Bears, turkeys, and early foxhunting lore fill scattered diary and local memory, with bears likely extinct by 1800 and wild turkeys fading roughly seventy years ago.
