Longtime Nebraskan Rickner to celebrate 109th birthday
Chops wood daily at his Lamar home for February 18 celebration. Born in the county in 1818, Rickner was deemed too old for Civil War service and has voted for William Henry Harrison and 22 White House contenders since. A daughter notes his continued physical exercise, while a separate anecdote recalls J Frank Buch hearing an old Lancaster resident compare birthplaces during travel in Mexico.

Local Dealer Attends Furniture Market Anniversary
E. B. Beck a local manufacturer and dealer with Paul and Abram Beck of Manheim spent ten days in Grand Rapids Michigan at the 100th Semi Annual Furniture Market. The event marks the fiftieth anniversary of the market and American homes. Buyers from top stores across the United States attended this twice yearly display. Beck also attended the January exhibition and will return home today as the fair continues through January 21.

Congressman W W Griest introduces a bill to authorize 2500 dollars for a tablet at Lititz to mark the burial place of 110 American soldiers wounded at Brandywine and died at the Lititz military hospital. Boy Scouts from Lititz with leaders Floyd Hackman Clarence May and Wallace Longenecker spent three days in Washington D C for an educational tour. The group traveled by buses and cars, visiting Arlington the White House Mt Vernon Smithsonian Institute the new airplane building and other sites. They stayed on cot beds at the Coast Artillery Barracks and brought their own blankets. The route went via York and Baltimore returning past Conowingo Dam.
