Shortening Motor Routes in the Keystone State

The completion and opening of two road projects in Pennsylvania cut the Philadelphia Baltimore route by eight miles. A new cut-off atop the Ten Conowings Dam in Maryland and a reconstruction over the old stage road near the Juniata River boost the route to avoid flood-damaged sections. The William Penn Highway segment between Amity Hall and Newport is raised about 20 feet, with the Juniata River corridor now guiding motorists through scenic Pennsylvania from Clark's Ferry Bridge to Lewistown.
