A Sullivan county farmer and wife report seeing a hairy beast in Bussero bottoms, rekindling local talk of past sightings like a 20 year old serpent and a tiger misidentified for publicity. The item coincides with a day of town entertainment and rising ad revenue as merchants note crowds and spending.
Beehunter a prize jumping frog will carry $500 belonging to Claude Moss on its back in a frog jumping contest on May 25 at Gilmore Stadium Los Angeles. Several prized garjumpers entered to decide California's champion jumper. Beehunter imported from the South Sea Islands by Moss amid bets and heckling reports.
Two Bicknell youths Melvin Fielder and John R. Gillen were sentenced to one to ten years in the Indiana State Reformatory after pleading guilty to grand larceny in the Greene circuit court Bloomfield. They pleaded not guilty to robbery and may have that count dismissed. Additional friends and other involved youths connected to the Bloomfield liquor store robbery are held or awaiting disposition in Knox county jail.
Worthington Greys visit Linton Merchants for a Sunday 2:30 PM opener at Humphreys park. Smith and Short lead Worthington with Stockrahm anchoring Linton on the mound as Hayes catches. Fans are invited to attend as the teams seek early season form.
Depositors of the defunct South Side National Bank, closed in 1935, will recover more than their principal. They had received a 100 percent refund on nearly $5,000,000 in principal two years ago. The Treasury Department announced an additional $357,000 to cover interest on the refunded principal.
Luther McMurray of Solsberry admitted for treatment after an accident on a WPA project this morning. Mrs Mack Griener of Jasonville admitted for a blood transfusion and discharged home this afternoon. Mrs Clifford Taylor of Dugger underwent a minor operation this morning. Miss Betty Jean Weaver taken to her home this morning. Mrs Emory Pruitt of Worthington and Mrs Raymond Pigg of Linton route 1 also sent home this afternoon.
Florence Hester of Scottsburg has been appointed Greene county home demonstration agent to succeed Miss Mary E. Wilsey who resigned last week. Hester will begin June 4 after a year teaching vocational home economics in Morocco schools. She is Purdue Class of 1938 and has ten years 4-H club experience including trips to state junior leadership camp and Chicago Exposition.
World War veterans from this area will travel to Franklin May 20 and 21 for the Seventh district American Legion and Auxiliary annual convention. A two day program includes a golf match, dinner at Franklin Country Club, and joint Legion Auxiliary sessions at the Armory and City Hall auditorium with District Commander C. R. Males in charge. Prominent attendees include State Commander Harold A. Schindler and other district leaders.
The U S postal department will issue a new baseball centennial stamp. It will go on sale in the Linton post office on June 13, announced Charles L. Wolford, the local post master. Printing is underway at the U S printing office in Washington D C but release occurs June 15.
Funeral services for Mrs Sara E Collins longtime Dugger resident who died Wednesday in Providence Hospital Detroit will be held at 2 30 PM Saturday in the Dugger Baptist Church with burial in Dugger Cemetery She is survived by her husband Frank and four sons all of Detroit and by five brothers and three sisters The body was taken to M J Aikin and Son funeral home and later to the residence of John T Alumbaugh in Cass INDIANAPOLIS Ind May 19 The State Alcoholic Beverages Commission said it will discourage beer wholesaler license applicants under the new liquor laws and will notify them that only one wholesaler can likely operate in their area
Frank Bruner of this city was fined $25 and costs totaling about $52 after being convicted of illegal possession of alcoholic beverages in a trial before Mayor E. V. Bull at city hall. The jury heard the case and recommended the fine and costs. John Todd Greene County prosecutor and Paul Haywood were involved as the state's attorney and defense attorney.
The FBI and Indiana state police announce the arrest of Byron Piner, 28, of Frankfort, in Idaho on charges of taking part in the Linden State Bank robbery about a week earlier. He faces federal bank robbery charges for deposits insured by the FDIC and will be brought to federal court in Indianapolis.
Chinese dispatches claim Tungpeh near the Yangtse river has fallen to Chinese forces in their second large victory of the war killing 4,000 Japanese soldiers. Chinese reports also say the city on the Honan-Hupeh border was reoccupied after 48 hours of bloody fighting and that Chinese troops pursue fleeing Japanese and retake nearby villages.
The House accepted Senate amendments to the 775,049,151 naval appropriation bill, the largest peacetime Navy appropriation, and sent the measure to the White House.

A special venire has been drawn by Sullivan County jury commissioners for the murder trial of State of Indiana versus James Jackson Batchelor. The case, moved from Greene to Sullivan for venue reasons, follows an earlier joint indictment with Sanford Humphreys in the 1933 murder of Mary Ellis of Jasonville. Humphreys trial will be in Greene County Court.
