Members of Epworth Leagues from a wide area attended the annual district meeting in Jasonville. Registration began at 9:00 AM with sessions starting at 9:30 AM. Rev. N I Schoolfield led communion and John Wall spoke. A noon luncheon was served in the church basement.
Ninety six Linton Stockton high school graduates will occupy the front row at 7:30 Sunday evening Bacalaureate services in the local school auditorium. The First Christian church will direct the program with Rev. B H Bruner delivering the sermon That Dreamer. The church adult choir provides special music and the high school orchestra will play the processional. Ministers from area churches join the program and the public is invited.
Plans for the grand opening of the Linton Municipal Golf course clubhouse are finished. An open house and inspection are planned for Sunday with a expected large turnout. The building, funded by Federal Works Progress Administration, features Indiana sandstone assembled like a jig-saw puzzle and includes a new dining room offering sandwiches to full meals. The grounds have been landscaped and refurbished for the event.
James D. Clayton of Linton attended the Indiana Conference on Fire and Casualty Insurance at Indiana University. About 250 insurance men statewide are at the meeting, with warnings and talks by leaders including Clifton M. Utley and Indiana officials. The conference began yesterday with remarks by Herman B. Wells, Ross E. Coffin, and George H. Newbauer.
Merle Ressler of Bloomfield was admitted last night for treatment after suffering a double fracture of the jaw.
In Bloomfield at the Recreation hall a Sunday punch by Flash Gordon of Brazil fractured Merle Ressler’s jaw in the first round. Ressler, from Bloomfield rural route, was taken to Freeman Greene County Hospital with a two place jaw fracture. Gordon won the fight by technical knockout as Ressler recuperates in hospital.
Elmer Cummins 46 Doyle Cummins 17 and Norman Walters 16, all of Sullivan county, are jailed in Vincennes Indiana while grand larceny charges are filed. They allegedly stole 400 feet of copper wire a clothes wringer and a life preserver from the Oaktown bathing beach club house on Noah Hall farm. The theft occurred Wednesday night and Hall plus neighbors surprised the trio as they loaded the loot into a waiting truck. The elder Cummins had previously served about 20 years ago for copper wire theft.
In Newcastle Indiana three Muncie men Abner Brown aged about 40 Charles Goodpasture 34 and Ralph Goodpasture 33 were killed when their car stalled at a crossing and moved into a westbound Pennsylvania passenger train near Dunreith. They were en route to Cincinnati for a baseball game.
The Rev. Virgil C. Jump gave 100 silver dollars to the Glenville First Methodist congregation to aid in earning more money. Members must return the coins with the earnings increases on June 1 and June 8, when the pastor will preach on The Return of the Talents.
Three Linton-Stockton high school pupils Hope Barrett Stanley Heenan and Donald Baughman reached the national final contests in music class B from Indiana with a second division rating by judges Their band director Bert J Barnes called their showing commendable and likened the score to 87 95 The National finals drew about 5000 high school musicians from across the United States while the Linton trio had earned first division in Bloomington to qualify for the national event Meanwhile a misreported accident story about Arthur McMurray WPA worker at Solsberry prompted a correction stating he was struck by debris from blasting not a live dynamite charge as earlier claimed and he is recovering in a Greene County hospital
Mr and Mrs R W Carey of Springfield Illinois have been visiting Mr and Mrs Henry Belval the aunt and uncle of Mrs Carey during a short stay in town.
London dispatch says Neville Chamberlain will consult Poland and Romania on the advisability of allying with Russia. Viscount Halifax, foreign secretary, departs for Paris and Geneva to conduct negotiations with French and Russian delegates. Also reports Irish Republican Army terrorists burned hotel bedrooms in six English resorts last night and today.
Tokyo May 20. Cabinet leaders finalize Japan's European policy after months of debate. The plan advocates sympathetic neutrality toward Germany and Italy with no definite commitments to aid the Axis powers.
Nelson Beasley, former Linton Stockton high school basketball coach, is appointed athletic coach for 1939 40 with duties in football and basketball. The selection follows a deadlock between the Linton City school board and Stockton township trustee, resolved by Greene County Superintendent Alvin E. Keller.
Queen Elizabeth spoke at the dedication of Canada's new supreme court building during her Canadian American tour. She delivered a bilingual address in English and French praising unity of the two nations and their traditions under a shared ideal.
The world premiere of a new opera The Lady of the Lake may be staged in Cincinnati this summer. Oscar F. Hild, managing director of the Summer Opera Association, said plans are being formed for the debut.
May 20 Vincennes reports two men, Paul Hill 22 and Badellet Ravellett 22, jailed after striking Gilbert Aldrich 28 with a wrench in a highway ditch near Wheatland and stealing $12. They face robbery charges with possible 10 to 25 year terms. a woman suspect Velma Farr alias Hart 18 of LaHarpe, Ill, was previously arrested.
Miss Genevieve Brown of Indianapolis a noted Republican leader will be principal speaker at Greene County Republican Women’s Club meeting in the Republican headquarters Linton Tuesday evening May 25. A 6 50 pm covered dish supper will precede a program of music and entertainment with invited guests including menfolk. Public invited.
A close Senate colleague says Vice President Garner favors early adjournment to aid the Democratic party Roosevelt and the nation. He cites continued large appropriations and infighting among Democrats as concerns and urges a united front for the 1940 election.

Joseph P. Kerns 64, a former Linton resident, died at 11:30 last night at his Worthington home. Survived by widow Cora and children Lionel, Matilda, Nellie, John, Chloe, Tom, Sophia, Virginia. one son preceded him in death. Funeral plans pending with burial in Scotland Cemetery.
