Washington May 18 The House Appropriations committee approved a $300 000 fund to finance a counter espionage drive by FBI G men. The emergency use money is included in the $121 309 120 state justice and commerce department appropriation bill sent to the House for action for the 1940 fiscal year.
Twin Safety Chapter held an annual memorial service at the Red Men’s hall with Rev Bruner leading prayers. Speakers included William L. Jackson, Sam Masters, William Cunningham, Will Dicker son, Walter Tomlinson, Stell Hobbs, Fred Ferguson, and Rev Bruner. The event honored deceased members of the coal production chapter with singing by First Baptist church ladies.
The Lady of Mrs. Frank Collins, a former Dugger resident, died in Detroit Michigan. Her body arrived in Dugger and was taken to the M. J. Aikin and Son funeral home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Raymond Moore, 31, accused of shooting and killing his former mother in law and attempting to kill his ex wife, hanged himself in the Marion County jail. Police say he was returned to the cell block after questioning and was found dead about 15 minutes after last seen alive.
James and Mayme Asrey of Linton sue the Greene County Board of Commissioners for 5000 dollars claiming nuisance maintenance linked to a hospital wing. The case moves from Greene to Monroe circuit court in Bloomington on a motion by County Attorney Edwin B. Long.
King George and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Montreal to a 21 gun salute and cheering crowds. The Royal train sped into the station on time as thousands, traveling from Quebec and Three Rivers, lined the route in old fashioned buggies and along the fields and roads to witness the royal arrival.
The State of Indiana vs Frank Bruner on illegal possession of alcoholic beverages proceeded this afternoon in the Linton court before Mayor E V Bull. A jury was selected and sworn in shortly before press time and testimony began. County prosecutor John Todd led for the state with defense by Paul Haywood.
The War Department announced that about 400000 American troops will be in the field this summer for massive training maneuvers. The force includes more than 100000 regulars and 293996 reserve officers and men in concentration areas.
Assistant Attorney General Brien McMahon announced the plan to retry fifty five persons and corporations accused of conspiring to deprive Harlan county Kentucky coal miners of civil rights. FBI agents gathered information in Harlan and observed incidents in the ongoing miner operator dispute.
Greene county sheriffs and state police announced that five Bicknell youths confessed to holding up the Gayle Lehman liquor store in Bloomfield and other crimes. The suspects are Jack Willard Boxley 17 Leroy Goyer 18 Melvin Fielder 18 John Gilliam 18 and Donald Dailey 18.
The Linton Rotary Club elected officers for the year 1939 40 after a weekly meeting at the Baptist church. Francis Haseman was chosen president Otto Harting as vice president Clyde Davis as treasurer and Homer Fordyce as secretary.
Hospital report notes Mrs Floyd Tincher Jr underwent a major operation this morning. Patsy Skemp of Lyons was taken to her home this morning. Mrs James H Franklin and baby of West Linton were taken home Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Oscar Kramer and baby of Linton Route 1 were taken home this morning.
The Lake Eva outing at Worthington ended with Governor M. Clifford Townsend and his party claiming the limit of ten fish. A minor incident reported hook snagged Townsend’s trousers causing an eight inch rent while fishing. no details on impact to the governor. The group included Lewis Johnson Dan ONeill Judge Dewey Myers Dick Heller Max Townsend Tom Quinn and Gus Ropp of Indianapolis.
In Harlan Kentucky on May 18 National Guardsmen and United Mine Workers pickets exchanged about 50 shots near the High Sprint Coal Co tipple at Rotz Two hours earlier a major power line failure cut darkness across most of Harlan County Capt Vernon Sanders stated the shooting marked the union drive to win a union shop contract for regional mines No injuries were reported
Mrs. Garl O. Easton of Valley City North Dakota appeals Gov. M Clifford Townsend to commute Orelle Easton's death sentence for the murder of a state policeman to life imprisonment. Accompanied by attorney William R. Pearce and Rev. R A Of stedal the mother defends her sons as good boys despite their crimes.
Miss Mildred Alexander a registered nurse at St Francis hospital Miami Beach Fla will arrive soon to spend her vacation with her mother Mrs Clara Alexander at 210 West Vincennes Street.
George H. Ringer 67 a long time Sullivan county farmer died in Mary Sherman hospital Sullivan from burns after a kerosene brood er stove exploded at his Cass township farm. The accident occurred at 6 30 last night as his son James Ringer saw him run from the burning brooder house. Ringer was active in politics church and farming and survived by widow Stella four daughters and three sons with services set for Cass Church of Christ. Burial in Dugger cemetery.
In Vienna on May 18 Colonel Hans Ritter von Epp led the Nazi Colonial League at the Colonial Federation convention. He pressed for the return of Germanys pre war colonies and tied the cause to a broader Axis unity with Italy. He cited Georges Clemenceaus remark about 20 million Germans and said Germany must feed them plus 20 million more. Thousands filled Heroes Square to hear the speech.
