Dr. Harry E. Murphy of Franklin and Mrs. Leona Aikin of Dugger were re elected as chairman and vice chairman of Indiana's Seventh district Republican organization at a Spencer meeting. Indiana Republican Chairman H Clark Springer faces 18 familiar faces and four newcomers for re election in Indianapolis after district results kept most incumbents.
John Suthard was taken to Robert Long hospital in Indianapolis for observation and treatment. His daughter Lula Suthard accompanies him and will remain in Indianapolis for several days.
Members of the Mt. Mellick club will meet at the home of Mrs. Henry Kramer at 9 o'clock Friday morning for a May break fast, it was announced today.
Dugger residents Wayne A. King and Clarence Car 21 confessed to burglaries at the Elbo Room in Linton and the Nelson tavern in Dugger. King admitted the Elbo Room break in. both said they stole cash totalling about $137 to $318. They face second degree burglary charges and were jailed in Sullivan. Police investigated two additional Linton burglaries and noted a prior arrest tied to the Nelson case.
Eleven district meetings of Indiana Democratic organization personnel were scheduled as the second step in electing a state committee. Districts include Logansport South Bend Fort Wayne Marion Crawfordsville McCormick's Creek State Park Jasper Vernon Connersville and others. The 22 officers elected will meet in Indianapolis next Saturday to decide whether state Chairman Please Greenlee shall continue leading the party.
A girl was born yesterday to Mrs. Gertrude Graves of Linton. Mrs. Herschel Elkins of Linton gave birth to a boy this morning. Mrs. Charles Graves of Lyons gave birth to a girl today. Miss Ruth Terrell of Worthington has been dismissed. Mrs. James Britton and baby of Calvertsville were taken home. Mrs. Lola Padgett of Linton has been dismissed. Mrs. Dora Wright admitted for medical treatment Tuesday. Bob Collins of Bloomfield admitted this morning. Mary Magdalene Bryant underwent major surgery yesterday.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall rejects any general negotiations with the Soviet Union. He says the United States seeks action through existing international bodies and the Allied Control Council. Marshall notes no bilateral talks and urges Soviet demonstrations of willingness to break stalemates.
In Seymour Indiana last night a taxi driver Clyde Hildreth 45 was struck by a southbound Pennsylvania passenger train and crushed between trains dying. The crash halted traffic at a B and O crossing as an air brake plug failed leaving trains immobile for hours. In another Seymour crash Newport Kentucky man Rowdy Turbovich about 40 died when his car collided with a truck driven by David Spack 47 Browns Town Indiana. Turbovich’s wife Anna and Samuel Craig 33 Browns Town were injured.
In Palestine on May 12 Jews won two major, bloodless victories as British control waned. Jaffa was handed over to Jewish authorities and Jerusalem's Haganah prepared to seize key sites. British forces withdrew toward Haifa as the mandate neared its midnight end. Ben Gurion expected to be Israel’s first premier. Fighting continued around Jerusalem and Baba Wad as Arabs prepared to resist a new Jewish state in Tel Aviv.
Queen Wilhelmina announced via radio that she will abdicate in September in favor of her daughter Princess Juliana. She will be 68 in August and had delayed leaving until after the national jubilee in late August. she has recently been ill and briefly delegated duties to Juliana.
Ray Keene of Sullivan is free under bond of 1000 dollars after his arrest Tuesday on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill. The charges stem from an altercation at the John Hamilton tavern in Dugger where Abe C. Harris of Sullivan was stabbed in the chest. Harris' condition was slightly improved today.
About 73 000 CIO United Automobile Workers walked out at Chrysler causing plant shutdowns across Michigan Indiana and California. Briggs Manufacturing cut 11 000 jobs with 2 000 more slated. Picket line violence erupted in South St Paul and Albert Lea Minnesota injuring several and resulting in arrests. A Caterpillar Tractor Co strike in Peoria Illinois faced union choices for a new bargaining agent. A government move to seek settlement with railroad unions was discussed to avert wider rail service disruption.
Thelma and Velma Gordon nine month old twin daughters of Mr and Mrs William Gordon suffocated in their crib yesterday while their mother visited a neighbor. She left the infants for about an hour in a South Side trailer court cradle and returned to find them dead.
New York report says the Federal Employment Service, a nonsectarian nonprofit, started a campaign to persuade employers to hire older workers. Its slogan proclaims experience loyalty and skill come with age.
G. G. Robbins is reported to be ill at his home on East Vincennes Street, with local residents noting his condition and awaiting further updates from his family and physician.
Indianapolis The Republican state committee reelects H. Clark Springer as state GOP chairman and reelects other officers Mrs. Mabel Fraser Delphi vice-chairman George Edick Plainfield secretary and James Costin Indianapolis treasurer. Indiana law on religious instruction questioned by Attorney General Cleon Foust though he doubts scrapping the act. Bevin accuses communists of blocking peace. Bobby Masters named Mr Basketball 1948 for Lafayette Jefferson after sportswriters poll.
Chicago publishers present a final offer to the AFL Typographical Union to end a five and a half month strike against the city's five daily papers. The wage increase moved from six to nine dollars weekly plus other concessions, with printers striking since November 24, 1947.
A community sing is set for Sunday afternoon at 2 o clock at Olive Branch Baptist Church. Rev Everett Moore announced it and Rev Stanley Sipes will serve as chairman. The public is invited to attend.
Jaycee awards for Linton High School athletes were given at a Lee Sherrard Park event attended by coaches Roy Williams Fallis Ward and Charles Hoskins. Bob Elkins Marion Woolsey and Norbert Graves received trophies for football basketball and track respectively. Garland Ladson led the presentation with a trophy handoff to coaches.
Carrie Etta Feutz age 77 died at her Bloomfield home after several weeks illness. Born June 8 1870 in Pennsylvania she was the widow of Charles Feutz and mother of Cayle Feutz who died this year. Survived by sister Lou Doak two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services Thursday at 2 30 pm at the family residence with Rev Charles Layton officiating. Burial in Smith Cemetery.
Linton Municipal Gas department reports April receipts 6322.46 and expenses 5043.59 leaving a 1278.87 balance. 230 new meters installed, 60 repaired, 140 on order. full metering expected soon for all users. City council also discussed water well sinking contract, school board seat petition, street/ditch survey, and tree trimming to cut radio interference and power losses.
