Linton and Terre Haute headlines say mining should resume within a few days as agreements may be signed. Kentucky and Indiana mines expect to open early next week with optimism rising amid a broad national funding discussion and tax concerns.
In London on May 12 Prime Minister Chamberlain said Britain and Turkey will conclude a definite long term agreement to bolster national security. The pact envisions mutual support in the eastern Mediterranean with Turkey aiding Britain if Egypt Palestine or Romania come under attack and Britain assisting Turkey if it is attacked. The move anchors Turkey in Britain's and France's anti aggression bloc and may lead to a broader front with Russia.
A memorial service for deceased mine workers will be held at 7:30 PM on Wednesday May 17 at the Red Men’s hall. The program includes talks by chapter members poems read by the minor poet and a main address by Rev. B H Bruner. Committeemen in charge are Hyslop Jackson Cunningham Rogers Clayton Masters. Public invited.
Dugger Indiana May 12 Residents map Memorial Day events for May 30 with Ed Shepherd named committee chair. Churches and organizations urged to cooperate. another meeting called for Wednesday night to confirm sponsors and volunteers. Last year’s program drew strong local support.
Dr and Mrs 8 M Cornell left this morning for St Louis Missouri to visit friends and they plan to return on Monday May 21.
The Linton Miners host a strong Blackhawk Deep Vein Coal nine at Humphreys park on Sunday. Deep Vein’s lineup features Vitella Cann ing McArty Lindsey Campbell Kruzan Adams and the Pugh and Goda brothers while Linton debuts centennial uniforms with new red caps. The game starts at 2 50 p m and promises a tightly fought contest as the Deep Vein squad aims for a standout Indiana semi pro showing.
Edwin B. Long Greene county attorney filed a motion for a new venue in Monroe circuit court Bloomington in a $5 000 damages lawsuit by James H Usrey and Wayne Usrey of Linton against Greene County commissioners alleging the Freeman Greene County hospital new wing causes obnoxious odors and noise a nuisance The destination court is not yet determined.
A daughter was born this morning to Mrs. Joe Burcham of Jasonville unnamed at birth. Another daughter Karen Arleen was born to Mrs. Dale Sargent weighing eight pounds three ounces. Both mothers and babies are reported to be doing well. Five year old Mary Catherine McCulloch underwent a minor operation and Betty Jean Weaver had a major operation Thursday. James Page was admitted for treatment Thursday night. Mrs. Melvin Mathena and baby were discharged home this morning. friends are asked not to call for a few days.
In Bloomfield the Greene Circuit Court records show four new filings. Home Owners' Loan Corporation sues Hermina Daniel and Peter Frank Daniel on note and mortgage foreclosure. Rufus Speirs seeks divorce from Thelma Speirs. Epsie Landis sues William Landis for divorce. Margaret Moss and Merril Moss face a note and mortgage foreclosure suit.
Sullivan May 12 Franklin Pierce 21 pleaded guilty to auto banditry and was sentenced to one to 10 years at the Indiana State Penal Farm by Judge Martin L. Pigg. He had been jailed since April 20 after arrest in Terre Haute and a foot wound from a failed escape. Pierce, a native of Arkansas, confessed to thefts in Sullivan and surrounding counties and in Kentucky.
A telegram from Ed J. Ecker to his son John Robert says Mrs. Joe McCul rough formerly Nellie Ecker underwent brain tumor removal in a Los Angeles hospital and is considered to be in good condition. Mr. and Mrs. Ecker left for Los Angeles Tuesday after word that their daughter's condition was serious.
Paris deputies back Premier Edouard Daladier’s foreign policy including a vow to fight if dictators threaten France or allies. In Washington Senator William King proposes ten percent cuts to all federal appropriations citing bankruptcy risk and need to raise taxes.
Four blasts shattered shop windows across Manchester in separate districts today. Police believe the Irish Republican Army is responsible for the explosions, which occurred early in the day.
A German fisherman was shot and killed by Polish forces while crossing the Obra river. The incident occurred at the river boundary, reported today by DNB, the official German news agency.
In Indianapolis on May 12, two of 11 defendants in a federal trial denied involvement in a conspiracy to defraud the government by misusing WPA labor. Lester Ratcliff and James Harmon testified, claiming materials and directions came from city officials and were used for WPA projects.

Firefighters from the Linton city department were summoned to Ted Smith’s North Main residence around 8 45 this morning. The roof of the attached garage had a small hole burned through with minimal overall damage.
President Roosevelt urged support for Argentine canned beef in Navy procurement as cheaper and higher quality than American meat. He warned the Navy would otherwise face buying American beef at 23 cents a pound, eight cents more per pound, with inferior quality. Roosevelt stated he had directed acceptance of the Argentine bid.
A 3% acre Oaktown park opens Sunday May 21 with a $1 prize for naming the park. Dedication speakers include outside guests and a band. features include a band stand softball field tennis court and playground. Park land was donated by Bert and Wilbur Yates and NYA boys built and landscaped the grounds.
A $25 fine plus court costs was levied today against Paul Elkins in State of Indiana v. Elkins for non support. The trial occurred in J D Linthecum’s justice court at Jasonville after venue transfer from William L Jackson’s court in Linton. Special prosecutor Ellet M Meurer led the case with defense attorney Paul Haywood.
