Parks in Linton and Bloomfield are terraced and rock walls built around Bloomfield tennis courts by National Youth Administration workers from Greene county. Throughout the state crews enhance parks and recreation areas to summer standards.
Warsaw reports the Polish army is ready to act immediately if the situation in Danzig changes. The government released a statement amid reports that Nazi groups in the Free City hope Poland stays inactive during a plebiscite or coup. A Nazi demonstration was planned for Monday night in Danzig.
Federal and state police hunted two young gunmen who robbed the Linden State Bank seven miles north of Linden Indiana. They fled with about $2,000 in a maroon Ford sedan reported stolen in Lafayette. The men wore flowers in their lapels and one threatened the clerk.
A potato described as a potato within a potato, claimed by Mrs. Jacob Strietelmeier of the east part of Linton, was displayed at the Daily Citizen office. The Irish Cobbler type “murphy” had split open and grown two small additional potatoes from the opening.
In Manchester Connecticut a soda shop owner faced a puzzling mix up when a coin placed in a device believed to be a pay telephone yielded a live dance band broadcast. Four other patrons repeated the action with the same outcome before normal service resumed.
Mrs. Henry Terhune underwent a major operation this morning. Mrs. Dale Sargent and her baby were taken to their home this afternoon. Max Rodecker of Switz City was discharged to his home this morning.
Plans were completed for a Freeman Greene County hospital open house on Sunday from 1 to 4 pm to mark National Hospital Day. All departments will be shown to visitors with demonstrations of the Basis metabolism tester X ray machine and fluoroscope. Mrs Bailey and Mrs Lynn will preside at tea. nurses will guide tours. Miss Vivian Humphreys arranged music.
Clina E. Hasler, Greene County AAA chair, says farmers who seed grasses and legumes with oats barley or rye may avoid deductions if floods droughts or insects prevent a good stand. A good stand is needed for non soil-depleting status, with evidence of workmanlike seeding and reasonable pest prevention.
Local men use automobiles to corral a large coyote in a roundup reminiscent of old horseback drives in Merced California, sparking talk of safer hunting methods and community concerns.
Mrs. W. H. McKinney departed this morning for an extended stay with her daughter Mrs. Coder in New York City.
Secretary of State Cordell Hull said Joseph C. Grew has made vigorous oral representations to Japan on humanitarian grounds regarding the bombing of Chunking and other Chinese cities by Japanese air forces. Hull noted the protest reflects the U S abhorrence of bombing undefended civilians.
In Chicago on May 13 a massive $4 million fire gutted five grain elevators and three million bushels of grain. Fatalities rose to nine with the death of 28 year old employee David Marvin from burns. Search for eight other missing workers was hampered by smoldering grain.
London reports Baron Franz von Papen made a last minute bid to derail the British Turkish alliance. Pope promised Sukru Saracoglu that Germany would offer a compelling deal if Turkey delayed the agreement, including bringing Bulgaria into a Balkan entente with the Rome Berlin axis.
A city hall meeting re-organized Linton's Community Conservation club electing Red Fulkerson president and Lester Aland vice president Avery Murray secretary Hubert Heaton treasurer and Champ Heaton publicity director. The group aims to add coon hunting field trials and fishing departments and to boost membership toward two hundred. They also plan a clubhouse near Linton with skeet facilities and will cooperate with the state conservation department.
Des Moines sees McDonald Taylor the world champion micro scopic whittler rivaled by another craftsman. Taylor carved tiny chairs from match sticks and mounted them on pin heads with a spoon at each plate and a dessert piece. He aims to make a chair with hair-like legs twenty six times smaller than a pin head.
Police studied an apparent suicide attempt linked to a murder merchants’ syndicate as investigations show the killer band extending beyond New Jersey to New York. Angelina Ruggerio’s poisoning followed nine other deaths tied to the syndicate. Rose Carina, sought by police, has five husbands, three dead. Joseph Peppe, a city political figure, was arrested for investigation. Captain James Kelly tied Peppe to Paul Petrillo, a South Philadelphia "witch doctor" alleged to run arsenic rings. Petrillo allegedly urged Peppe to find insurance prospects for the ring.
Chaplain S E Decker and Mrs Decker with son Donnie will arrive in Linton Sunday evening to aid in the United Brethren church service. They will sail June 8 for Panama to make their home. Decker is a former local pastor at the church.
A large crowd is expected at Humphreys Park tomorrow at 2 30 for a baseball game between the Linton Miners and the Strong Deep Vein team of Terre Haute. Deep Vein is regarded as one of Indiana’s strongest clubs and likely to play a major role in the state amateur tournament later this year.
In New Hartford Connecticut Robert Fecto found five pearls in a fried oyster order. The pearls were valued at 300 dollars each but frying rendered them worthless worth exactly nothing. The loss totals 51 900 dollars despite a 0.30 dollar oyster order.
New York May 13 A union shop agreement was signed between the United Mine Workers of America and a majority of Appalachian operators. Six southern associations withdrew, allowing 540,000 Eastern and 126,000 Western miners to return to work, ending a fuel emergency threat. The dissenters claimed about 75 million tons of coal yearly, employing 74,000 to 80,000 workers.
A train from Port Augusta arrived in Alice Springs after a 34 day delay caused by central Australian floods. The long dry spell broke with heavy rains, easing food shortages as other trains followed with supplies. Passengers occupied themselves with books, newspapers, and games during the wait.
