Eleven WPA laborers told federal court they worked on two private ventures in Kokomo, part of a conspiracy involving former mayor Olin Holt and ten others. Evidence showed WPA materials sold via a fictitious company and false bills of sale to the city. Investigations into WPA activity in other parts of Indiana were also reported.
Newt Williams aged 79 a retired coal miner of Jasonville died at 11:00 am in Free man Greene county hospital. He leaves two sons Fred Williams of Terre Haute Guy Williams of Jasonville and two daughters Opha Corbin and Jennie Wilkes of Jasonville. Funeral services set for 2:30 pm Sunday at Jasonville Baptist church with burial in Lebanon cemetery. McClanahan funeral home handling arrangements.
Fifty members of the Linton Elks lodge joined Bloomington Elks for a Linton night event and dedication of the Bloomington lodge home. About 250 Elks from Bloomington and nearby lodges attended, with Indiana Elks officers present. The Linton ritualistic degree team led initiatory services for a Bloomington lodge class of 33 candidates.
Vertice Belcher of Linton-Stockton High School receives a county scholarship to Ball State Teachers College in Muncie for 1939 40. The award waives the $22.50 contingent fee for each of the three quarters, but does not waive the $44 student activities fee per quarter.
WPA reports 29 560 tons of sulfuric acid eliminated from southwestern Indiana rivers by sealing abandoned coal mines. Jennings notes acid drains from hundreds of mines harming ecosystems and infrastructure with Ohio river basin damage estimated at 10 million annually.
Linton city firefighters rushed to a roof fire at 210 A Street NE at 9:30. Firemen escaped injury when a ladder shattered but Robert Trinkle climbed down unhurt with luck. The blaze caused little damage and the crew repaired the broken ladder afterward.
Judge J Raymond Powell of Greene circuit court imposed twenty five dollars and costs on Albert Terrell a 30 year old from Grant county after his vagrancy arrest in Worthington. Terrell welcomed the 40 day stay at Indiana State penal farm and agreed to work on a farm once released. Sheriff Bert Caldwell will escort him to the penal farm.
Mrs. Frank Hays and Miss Flo Brown with Fred Brown travel from North Main Street to Indianapolis due to the serious illness of former Greene County Sheriff William Brown. He is receiving care at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis.
Mrs Grace Hancock and her son spent Wednesday with Mr and Mrs Henry Campbell of Marco. The visit celebrated the thirty third birthday anniversary of Mrs Campbell.
Harry C. Fenton longtime secretary of the Republican State Committee was named by Governor Townsend to the state alcoholic beverages commission. He replaces the late Gaylord S. Morton and will serve until January 1942.
Paul V. McNutt American high commissioner to the Philippines sailed for China today on a voyage that will end with his return to the United States late in June Observers expect he will resign his Philippines post upon reaching America to pursue the Democratic Presidential nomination bid.
Representative Clare Hoffman of Michigan told the House Labor Committee that the Wagner Labor Relations Act must be amended to preserve liberty. He argued the act currently denies employers and employees their fundamental rights of free speech and to join or not join any organization while earning a livelihood.
Moscow reports Russia proposes a four power mutual assistance pact with Great Britain France Poland and Russia to guarantee European security. A three power option with Britain France and Russia would bind them to mutual aid to secure eastern and central Europe. Daladier tells the chamber France backs collaboration and a peace structure with Soviet aid, asserting Franco British solidarity remains strong.
Homer Vandeventer of Memphis was released after Greene county prosecutor dropped the grand larceny charge for insufficient evidence. He had faced related pistol without permit and surety of the peace charges, both of which were tried and acquitted. Judge Powell advised him to leave the county and avoid Worthington on his exit.
In Bloomfield a sheriff fired at an intruder fleeing Mrs. Nellie Helms' home. Bert Caldwell and a deputy pursued the unidentified man who escaped on foot. Mrs Helms is in a Greene circuit divorce case with Argil Helms.
A massive fire and explosion at a grain elevator on the Chicago south side left eleven missing and presumed dead. Fire officials said 800000 bushels of grain valued over 200000 dollars were stored in the 150 foot high structure at One Hundred and Second Street and the Calumet River, owned by Rosenbaum Brothers.
Mrs. Max Griener of Jasonville received a blood transfusion this morning and returned home this afternoon. A daughter weighing seven pounds was born to Mrs. Melvin Mathena, named Sharon Kay. Glen Booth of Indianapolis was admitted for treatment after injuring his left ankle in a Wednesday fall. Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m.
Indiana soft coal miners prepared to sign contracts with individual operators despite Appalachian talks. John L. Lewis acceded to government requests to negotiate locally and return to work under the old contract with a new closed shop clause. Negotiations and approvals were pending from Washington.
Police in the midwest search for Dorothy Sexton 14 and Mar gie Dickey 15 both Jasonville high school students missing since Saturday night. The half brother of one girl in Kansas City has been contacted as families seek to locate them. Authorities believe the girls may be en route to Kansas City.
