Mrs J W Clifford 70 widow of the late Worthington physician died Tuesday after a heart condition. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 30 PM at the family home with burial in Worthington cemetery. Surviving are son Floyd of Lorain Ohio daughter Mrs Tasa Clifford Love two grandchildren Louise Love and Mrs Barbara Griffin. Funeral arrangements by Lowe and Fiscus Funeral Home Worthington.
The Linton-Stockton high school art classes showcase oil paintings in the library’s east and west rooms through Friday May 12. Frames were crafted by shop class students under Miss Gladys Terhune. Miss Anna Lee Owen was named prom queen and Jack Scherer prom king in a tightly contested election at Linton Stockton High School. Their crowning will take place at the May 22 prom with six juniors as escorts. Campaigns included posters badges and rallies as part of the intense voter push.
Miss Mary E. Wilsey announces resignation as Greene County home demonstration agent effective June 1 after two years in the role. She will become assistant state 4-H club leader at Purdue University, one of two in the state, replacing Luia Whitaker. a new county agent will be appointed before June 1.
Local Elks members from Linton plan to attend Bloomington for Linton night and the dedication of the new Bloomington lodge home. The ritualistic degree team will initiate about 35 candidates as part of tonight’s meeting with arrangements for transportation from Linton at 5 p.m. All members urged to attend.
Miss Rose Harper of Hobbieville underwent a major operation this morning. Mrs. George Pope of Midla was taken to her home this afternoon. Zelmer Ray of Jasonville was taken to his home Tuesday afternoon.
Police in the Middlewest search for Dorothy Sexton 14 and Margie Dickey 15 missing from Jasonville since Saturday night. Indiana State Police radio broadcasts and neighboring states join the hunt as families report possible sightings.
Linton City police urged heightened watch for 16 year old Kenneth Patton of Bicknell who ran away from home. He is 5 feet 6 inches, 140 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen in overalls and a slouch hat.
Dinner guests Tuesday evening included Mr and Mrs N H Burkett and Mrs Mike Lyons of Jasonville. Also present were William Burkett of Elgin Illinois, Mrs Lester Collins of Lafayette, Bertie Billy and Mary Jane Burkett and Harry May.
LaGrange high school hires former Indiana University star Chuck Bennett as head football coach. He will begin duties in September after a career at Linton, Indiana and at Portsmouth before coaching Austin Minnesota and LaPorte high schools. Bennett, son of Phil and Mrs. Bennett, is noted for 1927 1929 Indiana varsity play and later professional football.
President William Green returned the AFL charter to the United Textile Workers Union and urged CIO affiliates to reunite with the federation. He said no penalties would be imposed and the door to labor unity is open. He declared peace requires CIO dissolution of the CIO.
The house appropriations committee reported a 255 188 154 dollar bill to fund civil functions of the war department in 1940. It covers flood control and rivers and harbors projects but removed 50 million dollars for those improvements after a sharp committee fight. The measure now goes to the full house.
The Linton City Council discussed numerous routine matters at the city hall. They continued a real estate suit, eyed gas customer growth, approved payments on gas plant debt, and set a May 20 oil bid deadline for 24 000 gallons for street use.
Senator Robert La Follette testified before a senate judiciary sub committee on a proposed war referendum amendment to the Constitution. He argued the people’s demand for a voice in life and death affairs should not be derided and that the proposal would not limit the president’s foreign policy.
Harold Fisher 14, son of Mr and Mrs Lowell Fisher of Palmyra township, drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming with three companions in a pond on the John N Bey farm near Fritchton Indiana. Harold led his friends into deeper water and sank. rescue attempts failed after about an hour.
In Klerksdorp South Africa Mrs Annie Burphy is believed to be born in 1820 and lives there. She reportedly sleeps for as long as 36 hours at a stretch and is described as a remarkable long sleeper.
In New York U P John R Steelman said a settlement may come soon as negotiators stay in session to draft a reopening formula by tonight for mines to resume this week. President Roosevelt pressed for an immediate deal during a White House conference with union and operators led by five U M W leaders and Frances Perkins. In Kentucky Governor Chandler announced planned National Guard dispatch to Harlan fields next Monday but said the order would be countermanded if a settlement occurs this week.
In Indianapolis May 10, testimony in a federal trial of 11 former Kokomo city and WPA officials alleges forged signatures on claims and warrants for WPA materials. Roy Revolt testified the endorsement bore his name though he did not sign the claim. Clarence Neumann also swore to forged signatures of Joe Tarkington on three claims and warrants for crushed stone.
Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin of Brunei, a little known Malay ruler, intends to travel widely visiting Ceylon and India and plans a two year stay in England.
