The Mine Run column highlights the Forty Plus club born in Boston as a mutual aid effort for workers over 40 who are out of work and must earn at least four thousand dollars annually. Members help each other by asking employers for opportunities and by maintaining job-getting records and letters.
May 8 Atlanta Michigan U P reports a massive forest blaze scorched 100000 acres across timber and farm land in lower Michigan. Two thousand volunteer firefighters CCC youths and regional equipment battled the flames on a dozen fronts as fire chiefs warned only heavy rain could end the disaster. Some lodges burned and wildlife perished. several firefighters suffered non serious injuries.
Indianapolis May 8 The state excise director Hugh Barnhart said there will be no limits on beer wholesalers in larger cities though smaller communities still see restrictions. The Alcoholic Beverages Commission has 22 applications on file and will issue initial rulings around May 15.
A capacity audience attended the annual Music Festival of Triad's Alpha and Beta chapters in Linton. Emil Taflinger of Terre Haute, a noted baritone, received high praise for his dramatic voice and solo numbers. Accompanist Mrs. Erdis Stevenson Bennett and director Mrs. Wayne Hamilton led the evening, with guests from Terre Haute among the attendees.
Mr and Mrs Ed Ecker plan to travel to Pomona California where their daughter Mrs Joe F McCullough formerly Nellie Ecker lies seriously ill She has been ill for a year and was thought to be improving during a December visit home to her parents
Mrs. Annette Glynn aged 70 a longtime Linton resident died at Freeman Greene county hospital after ten days illness. She was born February 22 1869 in Osceola Iowa and survived by her husband John F Glynn two children Harry Glynn and Mrs Milton Seibel five grandchildren and a sister Mrs Dora Eden. Funeral services are planned Tuesday at 2 PM at Welch and Cornett Funeral home with Rev Bruner and Rev Foster officiating. Burial in Fairview cemetery.
Indiana State police Seek Runt Houldson of Linton who escaped Saturday from the Indiana State farm at Putnamville where he was serving a two year sentence for burglary in Greene circuit court. He and Rex Starkey were convicted in a Huffman filling station robbery in West Linton. He was first at Michigan City prison before transfer to Putnamville. No trace of Houldson’s whereabouts was known by this afternoon.
The Linton Retail Clerks' association will hold a meeting at 7:30 p m Tuesday evening in the local public library. All clerks in this city are urged to attend the gathering.
Mrs Emory Pruett of Worthington underwent a major operation this morning. A daughter named Regina Ruth was born to Mrs Oscar Kramer of Linton Route 1. Mrs James Seamitt welcomed a daughter Janice Sue weighing 7 pounds 14 ounces. Mrs Schwitt formerly Miss Mary Susan Morgan. Mrs Raymond Pigg of Linton Route 1 had a major operation. Jule Williams of Worthington had a minor operation. Hobart Hayes of Linton Route 3 was discharged Sunday morning.
Artur Brown was fined five dollars and costs and given a thirty day jail term. Alfred Carto received a one dollar fine and costs and a thirty day sentence. Robert Blaker was fined five dollars and costs with a ninety day suspended sentence if he stays out of saloons and pays costs within ten days.

George Depew a Lyons resident about seventy died at 12 30 AM in the home of his daughter Mrs Ed Schantz east of Lyons after several months of declining health He had lived in Lyons forty years and leaves a widow two children Horace Depew of California and Mrs Schantz plus grandchildren and a brother William Depew Funeral services will be at 10 AM Tuesday at the Ed Schantz residence with Rev A H Daes of the Lyons Methodist church officiating Burial in Prairie Chapel Cemetery Davidson and Son Funeral Home in charge
Linton's 1939 clean-up week kicks off as Street Commissioner A. B. McDonald reports over 250 truckloads of rubbish and debris hauled today. Rain dampened effort but participation remained strong. The program runs through Saturday with free debris pickup for residents placing containers for easy access.

Mrs. Felix Haffley learns from daughter Mary Elizabeth that Mayme Wade of Vincennes has died. Miss Wade is aunt to Bud Lutz of Vincennes. Funeral services are planned Wednesday at Sacred Heart church in Vincennes.
Twelve year old Elmer Merry has undergone five operations in the past eight months. The first four were performed to enable him to walk, and the last was for appendicitis.
John R. Steelman of the U S conciliation service hinted at an important development in the two month deadlock between United Mine Workers of America and Appalachian coal operators. Negotiations adjourned until 3 p m as parley continued with no details released. Roosevelt spoke with congressional leaders for about an hour on the stalemate and possible federal action to end the stoppage affecting 460 000 miners.
Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Ellen Ella Garrett 68 of Sandborn rural route one were held today at Pleasantville Methodist Church with Rev. BE Bates presiding. Burial followed in Pleasantville cemetery. She was born August 3 1870 in Sulli and Margaret C. Smith Lester van County. Survived by brother John V. Lester and half sister Mrs. Mary Corbin. Newkirk Funeral Home of Pleasantville managed arrangements.
All sportsmen in and around Linton are asked to attend a meeting of the Linton Community Conservation club at 7 o'clock Friday night in the city hall building. The notice says important business will be transacted and new officers will be elected.
Hubert Davis plans an appeal to Greene Circuit Court after a Linton City Police court found him guilty of reckless driving in an April 29 accident at the A Street Northeast and Eleventh Street intersection. He was fined $5 plus costs.
