Mrs Charles Halbach of 869 D street northeast is in St Anthony s hospital Terre Haute recovering from a major operation. She is reported to be doing nicely but visitors will not be allowed for a few days.
Churches of Linton announce a July and August series of Sunday evening union services at different city churches. Services begin 7 40 pm with July 2 at the local Baptist church and feature speakers and dramas from eight congregations. The public is invited, with a note that schedules may change.
New York June 30 Jack Dempsey lay gravely ill in Poly Clinic Hospital after an operation for a gangrenous appendix. Peritonitis followed early today as anxious calls poured in from across the nation. His wife Hannah Williams, a musical comedy actress, stayed at the hospital overnight and then left to rest.
Warsaw reports confirm a Polish government communique stating that Danzig has established a free corps beyond doubt despite Nazi denials. Newspapers say anti aircraft guns were mounted in the territory in recent days as tensions rise over the disputed area.

Leavenworth Kan June 50 U R T Pendergast fallen Kansas City political boss suffered a heart attack today and was taken to the federal prison hospital in serious condition. Authorities say he also has other ailments as he serves a 15 month term for income tax evasion begun last month.
Mrs. Lloyd Clark became mother to a daughter named Janice Kay at Freeman-Greene County hospital this morning. The baby weighed six pounds twelve ounces. Mrs. Esther Clark of Jasonville had a major operation Thursday night. Mrs. Ralph Mullis of Newberry underwent a major operation this morning. Mr. Chester Haper and baby of Lyons were discharged Thursday afternoon.
Fireworks sales in Linton begin Saturday July 1 but this year will be the last in Indiana. A 1959 Indiana law bans future sales, with state fire marshal orders distributed to dealers. Restrictions include no sale to under 12 and no lighting at filling stations or other inflammable sites.
A new comet has been sighted and named Juriof Acamaros Hassel after its three initial observers. It is visible at Greenwich Observatory after sunset between Capella and Algol.

The White House announced that President Roosevelt signed the 1940 tax bill rendering the undistributed corporate profits levy void and granting other tax concessions sought by business groups.
The House approved a $1,755,600,000 relief bill for 1940 and sent it to the Senate before midnight. The bill aims to fund the WPA for the 1940 fiscal year starting tomorrow at 12:01 a.m. All WPA workers will be off on holiday until July 5.
Stephen Carpenter age 92 of Greene County dies at his niece's home six miles east of Linton after a three day illness. He lived most of his life in Greene County and was a charter member and elder in several local churches. Funeral services are set for 2:30 PM Sunday at the Switz City Christian church with burial in Switz City cemetery.
The Miller Construction Company, Inc. secured a levee contract along the Wabash River near Sullivan. Funded by the U S Federal government for a large power project, the bid totaled just over 57 700 dollars, slightly higher than the next bidder. Work to start in two to three weeks after administrative details are settled.

Death notice reports G Steele, brother of Mrs. P R Olinger of 89 Third Street SW, died Wednesday in Richlands Virginia. He was a locomotive engineer with Norfolk and Western Railroad, ill for three months. Mrs. Olinger and son Jack could not return for the funeral and burial services held today at lands.
