Washington June 29. The administration pressed to salvage devaluation powers and pass the 1940 relief bill by the 12 01 a m deadline. Senate house conferees backed by a 50 vote majority urged restoring the president s dollar authority in a White House meeting with Sam Rayburn and Alben Barkley. If the senate refuses, the monetary bill including the 2 0 billion stabilization fund and silver buying program may lapse at the deadline.
The Indiana Traffic code, effective July 1, requires traffic to stop before entering preferential routes on state highways and on city or county roads as designated by local authorities. The State Highway Commission will post STOP signs at entrances to these routes, with designation authority also given to city and county officials for non state highways. A new resolution sets preference at every intersection on state highways.
Friendly Grove Baptist Church near Jasonville marks 100 years with a noon basket dinner and an afternoon program. Morning services precede the centennial program as former members and friends are invited to attend and reunite with neighbors.

Lawrence Fesler of Koleen dismissed this morning. Mrs DeLome Pickard taken home in Worthington this afternoon. Mrs Ray Hunter of D street northwest also taken home this afternoon.
The gross income tax division lost a test case as Superior Judge Herbert F. Wilson ordered $12,154.65 refunded to Harbison-Walker Refractory Co. of East Chicago. The company argued firebrick used to line furnaces for steel production is not consumed and should be taxed at the retailers rate. The decision likely to be appealed to the state supreme court.
Miss Anna Lee Owens, daughter of Mrs. Ruth Owens, received a state Tri Kappa scholarship announced by the local chapter at a public library meeting. She plans to enroll at Brown's Business College in Terre Haute this fall after recently joining the Linton chapter. The group invited nearby towns to a July 10 picnic at Shakamak state park, with contact to Mrs. Lloyd Winters.
William P Roll of 369 Fourth Street Northeast suffered a heart attack shortly before 7:00 this morning while awaiting work at the New Hope mine, Linton Sum mit coal company. He was taken to a local physician and shows signs of improvement.
Pan American Airways Dixie Clipper landed at 4 52 a m C S T on the first leg of the earliest timetable passenger flight between the United States and Europe marking a historic aviation milestone as of June 29 in Horta Azores.
President Roosevelt signed the 1940 rivers and harbors and flood control appropriation bill totaling 305,188,514 dollars. The measure exceeds the budget request by 50,000,000 dollars and is 66,000,000 dollars more than the current year’s appropriation, with funds to be distributed through the War Department civil functions bill nationwide.
Mrs Nina Collier chairman of the National League of Women Shoppers legislative committee told the house labor committee that the AFL is split on Wagner act amendments. She cited 22 responses from 117 unions with 16 opposing the amendments and six supporting Green with qualifications.
The Twin Number Four mine of the Linton Summit coal company, active since 1920 and operating since 1925, will hoist for the last time tomorrow. Eighty men were employed. the mine has run at a loss for the past two years and dismantling should finish within two weeks. Only one fatal accident occurred in its history. Located one and a half miles west of the Triangle near state road 54.
Chinese reports say Japanese troops evacuated Yuhuan Island off Wenchow after a counteroffensive with heavy casualties among the landing party. Chinese forces claimed increased Japanese naval activity and warned of a renewed attack. Simultaneously 10,000 Japanese troops were starting a new push in the Chianghsien area to retake Yingching.
News from Jerusalem reports eleven Arabs killed and five wounded in scattered attacks. Simultaneous shootings rocked Arab villages while land mines exploded under a train to Haifa, derailing two cars. Military forces seized rifles pistols and ammunition across Arab villages in the last 24 hours.
Templeton Mine Foremen's club members attended a picnic at Shakamak state park and Linton Municipal Golf course. A blind bogey tournament at the golf course produced prize winners J. Jones Terre Haute first B Templeton Sullivan second T Walsh Sullivan third C Hoffman Terre Haute fourth Bud Wolfe Terre Haute fifth. The group then moved to Shakamak park for dinner.
The Linton Miners meet the undefeated Spencer Merchants at Humphreys park Sunday at 2 30. Trinkle and Blackburn will pitch for Linton while the Sharr brothers catch for Spencer. A large crowd is expected despite wind damage to the grandstand.
Fourteen boys from two patrols of Linton Boy Scout troop No 55 returned from a three day camp at Lake Knox five miles west of Oaktown. Scoutmaster Roy Glenn led the party in a mostly pleasure outing with humorous reports on beans flies and mosquitos. The campers held a friendly voting contest naming Billy Hopkins best Scout Bob Blevens laziest Scout Jack Davenport best attitude Buddy Cline champion griper Donald Bowers best snorer in seven languages Marion Tislow grabbiest Scout best leader and Mike Clayton in charge of one patrol.
Arthur H. Greenwood, former congressman, and his son Bob of Washington, arrived in Linton today to call on friends. He has just returned from a vacation trip to Florida.
August Buelo alias Ray Olson, 30, wanted for killings and the Mattson kidnapping, was killed by a posse near Grand View Bayfield county after 13 days on the run. About 300 deputies trappers and woodsmen pursued him since June 17. he was shot when he ran from cover at daybreak.
The first carload of Indiana wheat reached Indianapolis from Greene county via J. T. Jeffers of Bushrod Grain. It is No 2 red winter wheat weighing 58.5 pounds with 13.2 percent moisture. Harvest yields look good despite fewer acres, with well filled heads and many shocks. Use of combines increases while heavy rain in the county slowed activity but harvest should speed up later this week.
London reporters say Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced in the House of Commons that there would be fullest cooperation between British and French forces in the Far East in an emergency. He cited the recent naval conference at Singapore as guiding this aim.
