Steel firms oppose union drive in steel industry clash
New York June 29. Steel companies employing about 500000 workers and capitalized at 5 billion dollars declared war on unionization efforts. Through the American Iron and Steel Institute they vow to resist strikes and threats and to protect employees from intimidation while promoting collective bargaining free of interference. The move targets the AFL’s new industrial organization led by John L Lewis. Lewis’s United Mine Workers has raised over 590000 for a major unionization push, and observers fear a wider conflict affecting coal fields because steel interests own and source coal.
