It notes pricing per word, a 11:00 deadline, and guarantees on tire work. Contains names like Ostrex, Hamilton and Rexall Drug Stores, Brown Studio, Greene County, Bloomfield, W. H. Wakefield, Johnson Tire Service.
The High School band will meet at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening at the high school building. All members should be present.
Donald Pope and Robert Millen of Linton appear on the annual listing of academic honors at Indiana State Teachers College. Pope earned Pi Gamma Mu membership while Millen received a band service monogram. About 150 students were named in the list recognizing scholarship, band, student government, and national honorary memberships with a convocation held to honor those selected.
Indiana officials of the Works Progress Administration and the U S Employment Service announced plans to transfer about 8 000 WPA workers to private industry as of June 15 1939 in Indianapolis. An additional 300 non relief workers including recreational directors and teachers will be dismissed due to higher salaries. Jennings and Martin F Carpenter drafted orders to the five district directors of the WPA I E S.
Mrs. William Campbell and Mrs. Frank Neal depart tomorrow for Logansport to attend the Indiana G. A. R. encampment. Mrs. Neal serves as a delegate for the Linton Women's Relief Corps.
Four young men from Linton and nearby areas were sentenced in Greene circuit court after pleading guilty to second degree burglary. Judges imposed three to ten years in the state reformatory at Pendleton and disfranchised the defendants for one year. Confessions detail robberies at Criss Myers filling station and other local properties between June 9 and June 13.
Bill Alexander, 16, son of Mr and Mrs William Alexander, became the first Linton Daily Citizen-Indianapolis News carrier in Linton to earn a fully paid trip to Detroit and Canada. He achieved 40 new subscriptions, earning a ride to points in the north central United States and southern Canada. He will be a Linton high school senior next fall.
A revival meeting is in progress at the North Mission church at Third and A streets northeast. Evangelist Thea Jones from Cincinnati, Ohio, age 16, preaches nightly to a large local audience with special music each evening. The public is invited to attend all week.
Mr and Mrs Ted Smith and daughter Marybelle of North Main street with Mrs Ed Smith of Farmersburg traveled to Bloomington to attend the commencement exercises where their son Charles was awarded his diploma.
Marion Williams of Stafford township was named Greene county attendance officer at a county Board of Education meeting in Bloomfield. A former teacher with years in school work, he previously served in Stafford township schools. Following the meeting the board members were hosted to a banquet at the Black and White cafe.
In Stony Brook New York law officers aided by volunteers and federal state and local investigators intensified a search of wooded land around the Long Island estate where society matron Mrs William H Parsons disappeared six days earlier. Five persons were questioned at county police headquarters under F B I Inspector Earl Conelly with state police District Inspector S McGarvey present but not commenting on the conferences.
Mrs. Malinda Lester 82 widow of Drayton Lester died at her Lyons home after months of illness. Born in Greene County December 18 1854 she was a lifelong resident. Surviving are O M Lester of Lyons and Mrs. Elsie May Carpenter of Evansville. Funeral services set for 2 PM Thursday at the family home with Davidson Son Funeral Home in charge.
Margaret Wilson of Linton, Virginia Fougerousse of Jasonville, and Esther Beadle of Jasonville were dismissed or released from hospital care on Monday. Chester Stoeckel and Wilma Stoeckel, who underwent tonsillectomy operations Monday, were discharged this morning.
Greene county WPA workers were notified to turn in their Social Security cards and account numbers at the central county WPA office on South Main street in Linton. Some cards were sent to workers by mistake and must now be sent to the central office promptly. From there the numbers go to the district headquarters in Evansville.
Prosecutor Leonard Kincaid dismissed the indictment charging Mayor Sam Beecher and city controller Katherine Beecher with misfeasance and malfeasance in office. A May hearing had quashed the case, and Kincaid chose to drop the charges rather than proceed to trial.
Chiropractors from across the district met Sunday at Pope Sanitorium Bloomfield for a fish fry and business session. Dr. Lloyd Pope reviewed part of The Known Man by B J Palmer, followed by discussion. Next meeting set for July 11 at Dr Hazel Ramsey's summer camp Sullivan.
The Linton tennis team beat Bloomfield 5-4 on Wolfe courts in a Sunday match. Doubles wins by Lockwood and Mayhew and by R Wolfe and Junior Wolfe, plus singles by Walser, sealed the win as Linton plans summer Sunday afternoon contests.
Linton's monthly Thrift Day will be held on Saturday June 19 instead of Wednesday June 16. The change shifts from the third Wednesday to the third Saturday this month, with ads printed tonight and mailed Wednesday. Merchants expect more shoppers as streets may jam with crowds.
Amelia Earhart arrives in Karachi from Massawa Eritrea at 7 05 p m local time and 7 35 a m C S T marking a leg in her world flight.
Homer Marin of the United Automobile Workers informs John L. Lewis that auto workers will refuse to use steel from struck plants unless steel strikes are settled quickly. The telegram states workers will continue to handle steel for now but stand ready to halt use in car production if demands are not met.
Gov. Martin L. Davey meets steel officials and union leaders at the statehouse to avert violence amid the seven state strike field. Republic Steel sues for post delivery to struck plants as tensions rise with dynamiting and a potential settlement.
Word received today reports the death of William M. Lewis 83 formerly of Linton who moved to Flagler county Florida in 1909 and lived as a farmer in St Johns Park. Surviving are wife Frances daughter Ruth Paracea of Jacksonville son William C. Lewis of Bunnell and granddaughter Helen Lewis of Baxley Georgia. Funeral services were held at Espanola Cemetery with Rev C M Stamford of Catona Beach in charge.
Mrs. Corda Young, 48, died at her parents home four miles south of Dugger after a three year illness. She previously lived in Terre Haute and Linton. Survived by husband Barney of Pontiac Michigan, children Agnes, Homer, and her parents William and Mrs. Smedley. Funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Aikin Funeral Home with Revs Hunt and Wilson. Burial in Dugger cemetery.
