After ten weeks of talks, the Illinois Coal Operators Association and the Illinois district of the United Mine Workers reach a contract boosting wages by 10 percent and up, establishing a five day 35 hour week, time and a half for overtime, and recognizing the union as sole bargaining agent. Over 25,000 Illinois miners benefit retroactive to April 1, with the agreement running through March 31, 1939. Negotiations continue with the rival Progressive Miners of America in Springfield.

A cryptic classified advertisement in a New York paper sparked belief of a contact with those responsible for the disappearance of Mrs. Alice McDowell Parsons from Long Meadow Farm. Investigators reported no progress and no word from the Parsons family. The ad named M. Sennet and used the Huntington 97 number. Gerald M. Livingston denied inserting it or acting as intermediary.
