Word of the death in Princeton of Mrs. J. W. Colvin at 77 follows three months of illness at her daughter Mrs. James Dawson’s home. Survived by husband J. W. Colvin and three sons J. N. Colvin Hobart Colvin and J. P. Colvin and daughter Mrs. Dawson. Funeral plans incomplete.
The Labor Department reports real food costs declined 4 percent from April 12 to May 17 led by dairy products. The May index of all foods stood at 79.1 percent of the 1923-25 average, reflecting a 3.3 percent drop in dairy prices.
A large crowd is expected at Shakamak State Park Wednesday for a Fishing Rodeo and Fishermen's Jamboree marking the 1938 season opener. Registration runs 1 to 6 pm Wednesday through Sunday. prizes include largest bass and best bass string, largest crappie and bluegill. Washington June 14 The house rules committee tabled a resolution to send the Walsh Healey government contracts measure to the floor killing it for this session. The bill would blacklist violators of National Labor Relations Board orders and bar such firms from government contracts. It would cover contracts of 2000 or more and require adherence to Labor Board decisions with damages payable to employees in certain wage cases. Lewis urged passage stating contractors should observe the Wagner Act.
President Roosevelt signed the 220.99 million war department civil functions bill funding river and harbor improvements and flood control by the army engineers. The measure increases by 954000 over proposal and reappropriates 24025000 from unexpended funds while reducing current year appropriations by 52000000. The act directs hydroelectric facilities to be installed where feasible and shifts national flood control costs to local governments only for local works such as flood walls and levees through local property rights requirements.
Franklin Pierce McCall of Miami admitted guilt to kidnapping Jimmy Cash and enters a not guilty plea on a murder charge in the death of the five year old. Grand jury indicted him on both counts. murder trial set for tomorrow with potential death penalty. He asked attorney Stafford Caldwell to defend him. McCall showed distress over possible outcome.
Lieut. E. E. Yeomans named commanding officer of the submarine Sargo, launched at Electric Boat yard in Groton, New London. Mrs. Chester W. Nimitz christened the ship with a champagne bottle as thousands watched the ceremony. The Sargo, built under Capt. Claude A. Jones and Lt. Comdr. D. W. Coe, departed the ways after a year and 25 days of construction.
Five candidates from the Farmersburg Knights of Pythias lodge were initiated by a rank work team from the Linton Metropolitan lodge, 193, at a regular meeting in Farmersburg. Named initiates were Charles Coffman, William Sanders, Ray Kiser, William McClure and Hiram Drake.
Mrs. Ernestina Sheroeder, 81, of Spades Garden Elyria Ohio, spent the day planting onions carrots corn lima beans and potatoes after preparing the soil with a spade.
The House moved toward adjournment by week’s end after approving the wage hour conference report and sending it to the Senate. The RFC loan bill for railroads faces rail labor opposition, while a compromise offering unemployment insurance in exchange for RFC loan concession is considered.
In Wawona California on June 14 nine bodies from the March 1 Transcontinental and Western Airways airliner crash on Buena Vista crest were carried from the wreckage. The victims wrapped in canvas were brought out by forest rangers and pack horses to Fresno for burial.
