An automobile followed the cab with a man said to be Mrs McDonnell's brother Frank McDonnell. Police blocked photographers and it was unclear why the taxi trip occurred as federal and state investigators withdrew to Stony Brook to allow direct negotiations for the $25 000 ransom.

A son Murphy Knochs died in an auto crash three years ago now two stepchildren Fred and Ruth Cromwell and 16 grandchildren. Miller-Baxter of Indianapolis was the low bidder to furnish materials and build 200 miles for the Greene county rural electrification project.
