O H Brown, Greene county weather observer at Elliston, recalls a freak May 15 wind that roared like a freight train at 65 mph, toppling a railroad tree near the Big Four depot. He doubts his sanity until confirming the odd event with newspapers and neighbors.
The family of late William M. Moss founder of the Linton Daily Call gathers due to Claude S Moss suffering a heart attack after arriving from Long Beach California. His mother Mrs Okie Horney and siblings Mrs Gertrude Dyer Mrs Mary Dukes Dexter Moss are with him. Clyde Moss remains ill in Bogalusa Louisiana. Mrs Horney is 91 and active despite age.
President Eduard Benes resigns as the Communist party nears control of Czechoslovakia. Benes, 64, weakened by illness, has retired amid the February coup aftermath at Sezimove Usti. Gottwald is poised to become president with Nejedly as a possible successor.
William Otto Hubble 58 lifelong Linton resident died at a Tucson hospital after illness. Born January 2, 1890 near Linton, he worked in local coal mines before 15 years trucking. Survived by wife Tara, son Leon, daughter Ruth Smith, five grandchildren, and several siblings. Body to arrive in Terre Haute and be taken to Welch and Cornett Funeral home. Funeral arrangements pending.
One hundred fifty-two Indiana University ROTC students will begin army training on June 20. Thirty-eight head to Camp Campbell Kentucky for Infantry, fifty-nine to Wright Patterson Air Force Base Dayton Ohio, and fifty-five to Camp Lee Virginia for Quartermaster training. Three Lin ion cadets Kenneth E Ballard John J Coakley and Paul E Coakley will study infantry tactics at Camp Campbell for six weeks.
Freddie Ellis aged 24 former Linton resident died in Rochester New York at 6 30 Saturday morning after eleven months illness He was born February 14 1924 in Greene county son of Homer Ellis and Laura Wolfe Ellis He is survived by his father three brothers Howard Eugene and Cecil and two sisters Mary Lehman and Virginia Stone The body arrived Terre Haute Sunday taken to Newkirk Funeral home Pleasantville later moved to the family home Linton 329 C street northeast Funeral services set for Tuesday at Burris Chapel church with burial in Burris Chapel cemetery
Elmer Roscoe Booker 73 died at his daughter’s home south of Linton after five years of ill health. Born September 17, 1874 in Sullivan county, he lived most of his life in the Linton area. Survived by three daughters, a sister, and a half-brother. Body at Newkirk Funeral Home Pleasantville awaiting arrangements.
Sullivan Indiana city officials discuss installing parking meters in the business district to curb traffic. The council will consider a $12,000 appropriation at the June 24 meeting to purchase the meters.
George W. Lawson of north of Linton underwent major surgery at Union Hospital in Terre Haute last Thursday. His condition is reported as good as could be expected.
A boy named William Carson was born to Mrs Ruth Russell of Jasonville on Friday. Mrs Joe Ashcraft of Bloomfield was admitted for treatment Friday. Mrs Vannie Plew of Linton had minor surgery Friday. Miss Virginia Newsom of Worthington underwent a major operation Friday. Tonsillectomies on Saturday included Miss Patricia Uove of Jasonville Donald Hamlin of Worthington and James Vandeventer of Bloomfield.
A plea of guilty to grand larceny was entered in Greene circuit court at Bloomfield. Judge Parker Vosloh deferred sentence. Other actions included a divorce granted, hearings reset, and three marriage licenses issued to residents of Marco Linton Elnora Worthington and others.
Word reached here of the death of Joe Menozi in Joliet this morning. He is the father in law of Mrs. Virginia Holden Menozi, formerly of Linton.

Two Sandborn children suffer infantile paralysis with Edith Mae Wagoner 10 in an iron lung near death in an Indianapolis hospital while Earl Pahmeier is treated there with less severe symptoms. Merchants canceled a free Saturday night show and Sunday services were not held.
John Wilson of 320 Seventh Street Northeast paid a one dollar fine after a weekend court in Linton Police Court for overtime parking.

The Linton Eagles beat Worthington Merchants 13 4 under the lights Friday and topped Terre Haute Colored A C 9 6 Sunday. Pitcher Trinkle won his fourth game and Lynch drove in two key runs in the win. Woolsey led the offense with two hits, and Woolsey again had three hits against Terre Haute. A 5 pm Tuesday practice at the diamond was announced for all members.

Indiana's three week drought ended as heavy rains spread across the state on Saturday and Sunday. Readings ranged from .29 to 5 inches in Logansport area and Winchester recorded four inches, with widespread benefits to crops and pastures though some tracks washed out near Logansport.
A new closed parcel truck route shifts with departures from Bloomington at 7:00 am and Sullivan at 4:00 pm. Stops include Solsberry, Bloomfield, Switz City, Linton, Dugger, Cass, with adjusted arrival times throughout the day.

Freddie Eugene Newman died in the New Castle state hospital where he had been a patient for several months at 7:30 Sunday evening. He was born in Linton on May 27, 1915, son of Charles and Nellie Newman, aged 33 years and 10 days. He is survived by his mother and six siblings. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Aikin and Son Funeral Home, with burial in Bohley Cemetery.
