Senate May Delay Action On Rail Funding Bill After Vacation

The House passed the railroad funding bill 214 to 123 and sent it to the Senate. The aim is to take up the measure before the congressional recess. Provisions bar payments for alleged labor inefficiency during federal control and bar future claims against the United States by carriers. Rep. Webster offered an amendment to strike the provision but failed 149 to 17. The bill would authorize up to 500 million dollars in securitie s sales for additions and betterments, with proceeds settling railroads’ accounts. The Commerce Committee supports final settlements without new appropriations.
