Sul llvan Indiana August 22 sheriff Douthitt and deputies rushed to Farmersburg to stop a lynching of three Black men accused of assaulting three white women. A large, growing mob surrounded the jail while authorities debated how to move the suspects to safety toward Vincennes or Terre Haute.
Elkins West Virginia August 25 pessimism gave way to timid optimism in the coal trade. Buyers in Ohio Kentucky Indiana and West Virginia issued more quotations but demand remained weak with little production increase. Indiana shows near term improvement though output still low while Kentucky sees better domestic demand and more orders for prepared coal though production remains capped at about 85 percent in northeast Kentucky.
John Hessler head of United Mine Workers district No 11 warns Sullivan and Greene county miners to avoid mobs or night rider violence and not aid the open shop movement. He counters Penna statements, says no contract disputes were brought to officials, and urges locals to beware paid agents seeking to provoke harm to the union.
The National Guard units now mobilized from Ft. Knox Ky. are ready to divert to Sullivan County on short notice. Gov McCray and Adjutant General Smith told INS troops may also go to Sullivan Wednesday for the preliminary hearing of three men charged with mining rioting. Authorities warn radicals in Sullivan and other counties may attend, and state troops stand by for any emergency.
John Woezner a 37 year old resident who lived alone for over twenty years died of heart failure after robbers bound and gagged him while rummaging his home a mile northeast of Notre Dame university late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. He was found fully dressed with pockets turned inside out.
Macon Ga Aug 22 Eleven persons died in a fire that destroyed the Brown House, one of the oldest hotels here last night. One man is confirmed dead and firemen fear ten more bodies are in the ruins. Ten others are being treated at Macon hospital for burns or injuries from jumping from the second and third floors.
Dublin Aug one reporting secret Sinn Fein sessions to craft a reply to Lloyd George peace offers. Eamon de Valera allied leaders, with Harry Boland reporting on U S opinion, amid internal dissent over dominion status and a plebiscite proposal. Ulster unionists remain opposed as a Belfast bombing marred a quiet weekend.
The United States informed Panama it will not urge Costa Rica to delay jurisdiction over disputed Panama territory. A force of Marines from Quantico sailed aboard the battleship Pennsylvania, ordered by the State Department, to the canal zone amid Panama Costa Rica boundary tensions.
The Linton city schools complete their teaching corps for the new year. Principal W L Tatlock replaces C A Findley at the high school. A full list of teachers and room assignments follows, with revisions in staffing and roles. School repairs and preparations are nearly finished ahead of opening day in two weeks.

Des Moines seeks a return to street cars after a month of bus service. Merchants press for resumption as buses run widely but with less comfort and reliability. The public rider notes buses transport about 72,000 people daily, yet a regular street car schedule would be preferred.
