Rural and Indiana subscribers will pay 5 per year by mail starting Sept 1 with 4 prepay option. outside Indiana rate rises to 6. The note explains rising newsprint costs, carrier pay, and inflation over 15 years, plus employ ment of 18 adults and 38 youth carriers in Linton and nearby communities.
Jasonville high school lists twenty two candidates. the revived program aims to compete in eight games this season. The schedule includes home games against Princeton and Sept. 10 Mooresville, Nov. 12. away games at Brazil Charlton Dugger Bedford Linton Palestine Il.
Greene county 18 to 26 year olds must register at two sites. Wright, Smith, Stockton, Stafford, Grant and Washington townships use Linton high school with O L Johnson as chief registrar. Jefferson, Fairplay, Highland, Richland, Taylor, Jackson, Center, Beech Creek and Cass townships register at Bloomfield courthouse with county veterans service staff. Registration runs 8 to 5, dates span August 30 to September 19 by birth year. Truman defers peacetime draft for husbands and fathers and certain essential workers.
Tom Jerrels of Linton arrived without incident at Permanente hospital in Oakland California after being sent there with three other District No 11 miners by the United Mine Workers Health and Welfare Fund for treatment. They suffer paralysis from coal mine accident injuries. Jerrels’ address is 289 West McArthur Boulevard care Dr Herman Kabat Oakland California.
A converted B 17 carrying Air Force Chief of Staff General Hoyt S Vandenberg landed safely at National Airport after one engine failed over the Atlantic. The plane diverted from Bermuda on the final leg home from Europe and the Middle East. Vandenberg said the engine began throwing oil about 300 miles from Washington as it neared the capital.
Fred Fainot has joined the United States Army and is stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky He is a member of the 3rd Armored Division and is the son of Mr and Mrs James Fainot of 680 Vincennes Street
Washington announces new credit curbs on durable goods. A one third down payment for autos and one fifth for others, with most balances due in 15 months. Applies to items from $50 to $5000, plus loans for vacations. Violations carry up to 10000 dollar fine and ten years jail.
President Truman promised a thorough immediate investigation into charges that Senator Taft pressured the NLRB and publishers to seek contempt against the ITU and its officers. The ITU at its 90th convention denounced Taft and sent copies to the White House and Gov Dewey, linking Taft to the Taft Hartley Law debate and injunction strategy.
In Berlin the American sector reported seven German police officers kidnapped by Russian officers at gunpoint. Three escaped. four including District Police Chief August Hoppe remained missing. American safety officials linked raiding to post clash violence with black market raids that sent 800 Germans rounded up.

Qualifying rounds for the 1948 Greene County golf championship will begin Saturday at Linton Municipal with about sixty-five players anticipated in four flights. Bob Hess, local pro, predicts entries through Aug 28 and first-round play Aug 29. Bill Moore of Bloomfield is defending champion. trophies go to winners and runners-up in each division. Open to Greene County residents.

Western officials disclosed that Soviet intelligence fronts in Europe are soliciting basic public data from American businessmen in Wichita San Antonio and Rockford for possible use in air strikes sabotage or invasion. A heavy news item reports that Jacob Lomakin was stripped of authority as Soviet consul general in New York and ordered to depart the United States for alleged abuse of position.
