A reminiscence recalls the 1894 riot and expulsion in Linton, when white miners attacked a mixed crowd at Island City. No one was killed, but dozens of colored families fled, and no color lives in or around Linton since then. The piece notes lingering racial segregation and references.
Washington reports diplomats view Moscow's charges against Lt. Robert H. Dreher as a Kremlin ploy to divert attention from the Soviet teachers' case. State Department said Dreher was framed and noted earlier U S embassy opposition to the spy claims.

Dr M T Eaton leads 44 educators in 12 autos visiting Mexico City's educational facilities and returning Aug 28. A parallel 12 educators fly south of the border under W W Wright in a separate travel study tour sanctioned by the National Education Association.
Babe Ruth remained in critical condition at Memorial Hospital in New York for cancer and allied diseases. A hospital bulletin said he spent a comfortable night and there has been no significant change in his status over the past 24 hours.
Western diplomats led by U S Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith and British and French envoys met Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov in Moscow to seek a formula ending the Berlin crisis. No conclusions were reached as talks extended, with plans for a Western German state advancing in Berlin and a joint Ruhr blueprint anticipated next month.
Four marriage licenses were issued during the weekend by the clerk of the Greene circuit court at Bloomfield. Lincoln Nebraska Brown trout grew big and frisky in the North Loop River. Carl Paterson state game commission legal adviser caught a 26 inch trout north of Halsey. He landed it once it shook loose and flopped back, then he found the fish again and kept it.
In a midyear budget review President Truman warned of a possible $1.5 billion deficit for the year ending June 30, citing higher defense spending and tax cuts. Republicans led by Bridges and Millikin accused the president of juggling figures and warned of a future surplus only as a paper fiction. The GOP proposed a higher revenue and lower spending path and urged disciplined fiscal management under a Republican administration.
Mrs. Margaret M. Graczyk and Lewis Green were treated or admitted for medical needs in Jasonville and Gilmour on Friday. A premature newborn girl of Martha Rogers in Bicknell died shortly after birth. Major surgery Friday for Mrs. Earl Reeve in Linton. Mrs Hyla Johnson in Linton welcomed Gregory Owen by caesarean Saturday. Mrs Mary Pritchard in Linton gave birth to William Ralph Saturday. Mrs Troy Newman in Linton admitted Saturday. Mrs Louise Michael in Jasonville Route 1 had a son Lloyd Pierson Saturday. A boy named Joseph Daniel was reported as well.
A sale at the Indianapolis stockyards produced a top hog price of 31 dollars per hundredweight, tying the all time high set last December and equaled in multiple markets since July, with hogs described as good and choice. The report notes the record has been tied six times in eight months.
The Army announced its initial Selective Service draft call will target about 15 000 men around Sept 2 with stateside processing 60 days earlier. Officials expect the flow to rise to roughly 30 000 monthly as the program expands and officers will be sought from both draftees and volunteers.
The Linton Eagles defeated the Washington Moose 8 to 2 yesterday. Tate earned the win as Wiles took the loss, with Woolsey totaling three hits for Linton and Wiltz driving in Washington’s two safeties. The Eagles next face Bedford AC Friday and an Indianapolis team Saturday under the lights at High School Park.
Rev and Mrs George Payne conduct services at the Assembly of God church in West Linton at 7 30 each evening this week except Saturday. Pastor Rev W S Duncan invites the public to attend.
State police report eight fatalities across Indiana from traffic crashes drownings a plane crash and a fire. Victims include Jack Kent 78 of Indianapolis killed by a car, Oliver Snyder 16 of Vincennes struck by a vehicle, and Robert Biltimier 26 student pilot in a Hoosier Airport crash.
Rex Fullom of Bloomfield is in serious condition at Free man-Greene county hospital with abdominal stab wounds from an altercation at Ivan Hash’s Bloomfield home. Hash filed charges. later reports said Fullom’s condition was not as serious as first feared.
Mrs Martha Jane Beck aged 70 longtime Coalmont resident died Sunday morning in Robert Long hospital Indianapolis after a brief illness. She was born in Sullivan county and survived by son Winifred Malone Coalmont and daughter Mrs Gladys Thornberry Sullivan along with brothers Allen Manford and Garrett Osburn of Fairbanks. Funeral 10:30 a m Wednesday at Coalmont Baptist church with burial at Little Flock Cemetery Shelburn. McClanahan Funeral Home Jasonville in charge.
James Fagan 90 retired coal miner died at 8 57 pm Saturday at sister-in-law Mary Hussey's home 80 Fourth Street N W. He lived with the Hussey family 63 years and in Linton 51 years. Born Sept 6 1857 in Cannelton he was a St Peter's Catholic church member and United Mine Workers member. Survived by five nieces and a half brother Michael Hossey. Funeral services at St Peter's with Rosary, burial in Fairview cemetery.
Miss Naomi Kramer of J street northwest fractured her right leg in a Friday the Thirteenth accident in Lin ton. She suffered a fall leading to the injury.
A Reno fire and explosion destroyed half a block killing five and wounding about 80 as a minor blaze spread to a Chinese cafe an army surplus warehouse and a hotel. Firemen fought the flames while witnesses described debris and shattered windows from the blast.
Albert Good 88, longtime Sandborn resident and Bethel Baptist member, died Saturday night at Marvy Sherman Hospital Sullivan after a year of ill health. Born February 8, 1889 in Greene County, he married Rosa Brewer in 1909. she died in 1920. Survived by one sister Mrs. John Spencer of Sandborn. Funeral at Bethel Church Tuesday 11 AM, with cremation at Bethel Cemetery.
