The New Douglas C-74, the largest cargo aircraft, landed at Gatow airfield with over 20 tons of flour for the Soviet-blockaded western sectors of Berlin. The plane, still secret in parts, traveled from Rhein Main, boosting Western allies’ effort to supply the city amidst the Russian blockade.
Mr and Mrs Andrew Palmer of New York City announce the birth of a daughter born on August 12. Mrs Palmer formerly Miss Madge Pichard daughter of Mrs J A Sparks of Lyons.

He urged Attorney General Tom C Clark to release loyalty records, which Clark has refused. The House Un American Activities Committee weighs a test to resolve Whitaker Chambers versus Alger Hiss. Hiss defended innocence at a secret hearing and will face Chambers on Aug 25. Ferguson said hearings resume next month.
The 20th annual Shake reunion will be held Sunday August 22 at Humphreys Park. All family members are cordially invited to attend according to an announcement here today.

George Edward Jones died of a heart attack at his home 509 East Kirkwood Bloomington after dinner. Born October 13 1886 in Marshall Illinois he lived in Greene and Sullivan counties most of life. Survived by wife Verna Blanche Hale son and siblings. Funeral services set for Thursday at Dugger funeral home with Jutus Hesson officiating.
A 19 year old Lafayette man died after a companion said he played Russian roulette on a squirrel hunting trip. Sheriff reports one chamber loaded and fired in a .22 pistol.
Noble Mall of Linton Route 3, a patient at St Anthonys hospital for several weeks, is reported to be improving steadily.
Harley G. Craig 57 former Linton resident died Monday evening in a Tacoma Washington hospital. He formerly worked at the Railway Express office here before moving west. Survived by widow Belle Kent of Linton a sister Mrs George Eske w of Linton and a brother Ralph Craig of Omaha Nebraska.
George Kaperak of Terre Haute captured the 1948 Elks state golf championship with 148 over 36 holes at Forest Hills Country Club Richmond won the four man team event with a 619. Dale Morey Martinsville 137 was ineligible for first prize as a former pro. Bud Rousch of Linton posted 174 but missed a prize by one stroke.
Rex Fullom and Robert Fulford received medical treatment, along with several others including Haldon Shepherd and Ella White undergoing major surgeries. John Grafe had a tonsillectomy. A girl named Jane Ann was born to Helen Davidson. Barbara Murphey welcomed a daughter. Mary Pritchard and baby, and Sally Ann Scott and baby, were discharged home. Margaret Graczyk was dismissed.
Indiana high school officials shift policy for Wabash Valley Tourney teams. The event will count as one tourney though it spans two weekends, allowing a full 18 game regular season. Previously finals teams faced schedule deductions or required pre season cards, now avoided.
Housewives formed new resistance groups in Los Angeles Denver and San Francisco to combat high meat prices while national prices showed little sign of drop. Butter meanwhile fell two cents a pound in New York for a second straight day and Chicago saw a four cent decline.
Workers at seven International Harvester plants walked out today after contract talks collapsed. The CIO UAW announced a settlement, then said negotiations failed. Richard Gosser blamed Harvester as reneging. In Evansville a traffic jam followed the walkout as Bryansville plant workers learned of the strike and picket lines formed at the plant.
Officials report a 45 passenger Diesel coach from Indianapolis Transit Company vanished from yards in the early morning. Police alerted as search begins, bus valued near $17,000. Officials suggest it may be misplaced or borrowed by a prankster.
The Secret Service warned of a flood of very deceptive counterfeit ten dollar bills seen in Indianapolis and other cities. Raymond A. Horton said the counterfeits likely originated in Chicago, with Chicago authorities reporting up to $1500 in such notes during one week.
Rex Fullom of Bloomfield is in Greene county jail after knife wounds from a scuffle at Ivan Hash home on South Jefferson Street. His mother Mrs. Bessie Fullom is confined to the county hospital. Prosecutor John O. Moomaw filed assault and battery and housebreaking charges with bond set at 1500 for Rex and 500 for Mrs. Fullom. The injuries are described as mostly superficial.
Linton fans will see two top Wabash Valley teams in a Wednesday night double header at High School Park. Post No. 40 of Terre Haute faces Robinson St. Myers with Terre Haute pitcher undefeated, while Post 49 also holds an undefeated record. Krocher of Robinson tops Southern Illinois on the mound. A curtain-raiser precedes the main game and a hat appeal will raise travel funds for the visiting squads.
Boston report states Harry Dexter White 56 former assistant secretary of the treasury and key figure in Washington spy hearings died at his Fitzwilliam New Hampshire summer home. He died of a heart seizure as his family disclosed today leaving a wife two daughters and several siblings. Funeral services will be held here Thursday.

New York, Aug 17 U P. The baseball idol Babe Ruth died quietly at Memorial Hospital at 6 01 p m after two years of illness. He held a record 714 career home runs and 60 in a season. The nation mourns the Sultan of Swat as President Truman sent condolences and crowds gather for prayers and public viewings at the funeral chapel.
Final performance of The Vagabond King closes Butler Bowl summer season. Rudolf Friml’s operetta runs August 15 21 featuring Marguerite Piazza and Harold Patrick in lead roles with Phyllis Wilcox Dennis Carroll Emalyn Rommel William McCarthy in supporting parts. Alonzo Price directs and Charles Hedley conducts.
