The first frost of the season touched Lincoln Monday with ice on car tops and frost in low lying areas. The National Weather Service reported an overnight low of 35 degrees.
The U S Supreme Court refused to hear Erwin Simants challenge to Nebraska’s death law, leaving his 1975 murder conviction for six Kellie family members in rural Sutherland intact. The decision upholds earlier rulings that capital punishment can stand with proper review and without a jury at sentencing.
Five hijackers who seized a Japanese jetliner on a six day cross continental journey released the last 19 hostages and surrendered to Algerian authorities. A $6 million ransom was paid by Japan. The plane landed in Algiers from Damascus after a two stop trip via Bangladesh.
Weather outlook for tonight and Tuesday with a high of 68 and a low of 46. A joint Soviet American communiqué on the Mideast draws mixed reviews from Israel and Arab diplomats. Also notes on the federal farm act and local public defender candidacy, plus the Nebraska Diagnostic Research Center readiness.
Washington officials outline a uniform system to classify cancer causing chemicals, set exposure limits, and use model rules to regulate, with three categories for chemicals. The plan, criticized by the plastics industry, targets industry wide hazards and could take a year or more to implement amid possible court challenges.

About 100 grade school pupils were overcome by fumes when a janitor attempted to start a furnace at Marlborough School in Kansas City Missouri. Several children were carried from the building unconscious, with no deaths reported at once.
Nebraska coach Tom Osborne told the Extra Point Club Kansas State is as strong as Indiana and noted Nebraska’s 55 passing yards against Indiana. He cited Indiana’s strong effort, predicted similar resolve from Kansas State, and praised Kansas State’s improved defense under coach Gene Huey.
Nebraska coach Osborne praises Kansas State’s offense led by quarterback Wendell Henrikson and notes running back Mack Green is a strong threat after a 24 21 defeat to Mississippi State. Green rushed for 181 yards and is compared to Isaiah Hipp as a top back.
