A Philadelphia Chronicle report notes Governor Shunk of Pennsylvania is dead. On the steamboat Fashion’s late Louisville trip a vote tally showed Cass Taylor 49 and Van Bureau amid irregularities as a Whig poll book keeper closed the election early. Passengers largely were returned volunteers.
Pursuant to prior notice the Democratic County Convention convened at the Court House in Lin s on Saturday the 9th of July. The committee appointed to draft resolutions included M. Wilson vice president Charles Peat and others. The meeting adjourned around 1 o'clock PM with further business to follow.
Delegates from townships including Jackson, Bath, and Marion drew up and adopted a platform reaffirming the Baltimore Democratic National Convention's policies. They condemn federal internal improvements and debt assumptions, oppose abolition agitation, and pledge economy, states rights, and a firm stand against the federal intrusion into state affairs. The convention nominated candidates for commissioners, coroner, and other local offices, and adjourned after electing a central committee.
In a fiery county editorial, Gen Taylor defends constitutional rights against Whig manipulation. He berates editorials in the Reporter, questions the Wilmot stance, and pledges to stand with Democrats to resist oppression. He notes Aug 1, 1848, as his date of statement and cites Gov Morahead’s letter as evidence of Taylor’s honesty.
The Light reports orders for the 3d Brigade to meet at Lama on the third Tuesday in August at 1000 hours for parade practice. Brig. Gen. WM. ARMSTRONG directs the 1st Company Cavalry to Lima on August 17 at 9 AM armed and equipped. The 6th Company of... will parade to Westminster on Friday next.
