A fragment from 1845 letters to the Hartford Times envisions a future where nations awaken. It imagines England and France, Germany and Erin, tied together by a shared anthem "Yankee Doodle dandy" and dramatic political changes.
A once wealthy merchant loses his fortune and returns to a modest life. His family adapts, earning income through smallscale work, teaching, and crafts. With unity and industry they restore happiness, health, and a simpler prosperity at a cottage home near the city.
A wife urges staying in health and contentment by remaining with modest means. The youngest asks the father not to become rich again, recalling that wealth once kept the children, including the nursery, away from home. The family values togetherness, work, and usefulness over wealth.
Shortly before the war of 1812 a American captain carried British officers to Portsmouth West Indies. They boasted of capturing American ships, but news arrived Hull captured Guerriere. The captain then quipped Hull was broken by a court martial and later celebrated each American victory, to the dismay of his English companions.
A St. Petersburg letter notes the Emperor discussed freeing peasants from personal servitude to place them on par with Poles and Baltic provincials. Opposition from the Grand Duke Michel and others cites risks to order on the eve of possible war. Civil and military authorities were sent to probe public sentiment. A Queretaro dated May 30 letter reports about one thousand American deserters joining the Mexican army. In cities near the frontier, about 200 deserters were moved, many seen in Mexican streets. The deserters hinder Mexican forces but defend Pena y Pena. Commissioners seek to move American forces to Vera Cruz. options via San Luis Potosi and Saltillo refused. Generals Butler and Sevier are noted with plans regarding exit from the country.
A village in France held a lottery selling tickets at two dollars each with one prize of the handsome but poor contestant. A widowed or unwed woman won the prize and married the young man within a day. The winning couple began married life with a fortune in francs while hundreds of others, still single, linger in the village seeking husbands.
A 14 year old aboard the Alexandria from New Orleans to New York is confined in a water cask after disobedience. During a storm the cask rolls into the sea but strands on Cape St. Blas beach where a cow frees the boy. He is rescued by fishermen at Apalachicola and travels north via Columbus aided by a small donation.
Long report from a Democratic meeting in Trenton New Jersey where George Constantine Collins Philadelphia, a former Whig influencer, denounces Henry Clay and the Whig party. He champions Cass and leads a shift toward democracy, recounting past loyalties and criticizing Whig leaders for anti-Taylor moves and native policies.
Fragmentary article notes a political forum result and predictions about Crawford in Ohio. It references Whig Almanac style calculation and urges Democratic support, warning against underestimating Crawford and a potential insult to her.
