Wentworth Academy Closing Exercises in 1902
At Wentworth Military Academy Lexington the 1902 closing exercises featured a dress parade and guard mount, a sham battle, baseball with Manual Training School of Kansas City, field day events, a baccalaureate sermon by Dr. M. N. Thomas of Little Rock, and a graduation address by Hon. David Overmeyer of Kansas. Cadets, under Major A. W. Allen and Captains Chalkley Barnhart and A. B. Albro, received praise for drill and discipline. Awards highlighted Davis A as best all around athlete with 31 points and Williams as silver medalist with 24, plus numerous prizes in track and field events. The site near the Missouri River, adjacent to Central Female College, figures prominently in the narrative of the academy’s prominence and faculty.
