Higginsville High School girls outplayed Lexington 28 to 6 in a final season match. Captain Bill Ashurst led Lexington with 21 points from 10 field goals and a free throw, while Virgie Welch added key shots. The piece also notes the marriage of Lawrence A. Chambers to Ruth Speas near Lexington.
The L H S five defeated Corder 34 to 18 in a Friday game after girls had won Thursday. Corder had previously lost 58 to 25 on the local court, but the eastern Lafayette lads reversed the result this time. It was the final game of the season for Corder.
Wednesday Carl Peterson and Joe Kimpo were charged with drunkenness and fined 6.70 dollars each. Thursday afternoon Thomas J. Kennedy and Miss Ada Ramsey, Frank Bryand and Miss Vicle Crabtree were married in the Recorder's office by Judge N. Wilson.
Word reached here yesterday that Frank R. Howe a well known citizen of this city was married in Excelsior Springs Wednesday afternoon at 2 o clock to Miss Isabel McAfee of Independence. No further information regarding Mr Howe s escape from bachelorhood is obtainable.
A double wedding occurred in Wellington on Wednesday at the home of Rev Mc Corkall. The couples were Dora Lee Brock and John W Curtner, and Amelia P Semler and Albert C Brock. Licenses were issued Wednesday morning.
Mr Marion E Stapleton and Miss Martha F Odell, both of this city, were married Sunday evening at seven o'clock at the Episcopal church. Rev Charles A Weed officiating.
Thomas H. Duffer of Morgan County Missouri married Miss Dillie Paugborn of Hodge in a Wednesday afternoon ceremony at the Recorder’s office conducted by Judge S N Wilson.
Col. A. Loomis accompanied by his wife went to Kansas City on Friday to spend the day together, visiting local sites and returning in the evening.
Wentworth announces a slate of games with St Pauls College Kemper Military School Missouri Military Academy Chinese University of Hawaii and others from April to May. Key matchups include Kemper Mo Military Academy and the Chinese University of Hawaii as the standout touring club. The team has practiced despite weather and seeks a pitching upgrade to support Fletcher’s successor.
Colonel Sellers of Wentworth Military Academy urged Lexington boys to join a training program. Major Palmer would provide War Department grade instruction with arms use. Participants would wear khaki uniforms for a small fee and gain practical military training to serve the country.
Friends of Fred J. Helsby announce he will remain in Lexington after March 21. He will operate from the garage north of Morris' Hotel, offering personal attention to repairing and overhauling automobiles and inviting all owners to seek his services.
H Swartz formerly employed by Henry Swartz in this city departed Wednesday for Trenton Missouri where he will establish a new location job.
T C Sawyer traveled to Independence on Tuesday to attend the funeral of his brother in law W L McCoy who died in Kansas City Sunday night from paralysis. He was in his 69th year and is survived by a son S A McCoy of Spokane Washington and a daughter Mrs A C Knox of s City. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in Independence.
Dr. Morris received a telegram Monday announcing the death of his half-brother William Stoveall of Craig Missouri. Death caused by paralysis. Born in Illinois, he was about 70. Survived by his wife and twelve children. Mr. Morris departed Monday to attend the funeral.
Mrs Joe Barnett of this city received a telegram Friday announcing the death of her brother's wife Mrs Helen Grant of Laramie City Wyoming who died very suddenly Thursday morning. Mrs Grant is survived by her husband Norton Grant and two sons Morterei and Ulysses Simpson Grant of that place.
A six room frame residence occupied by Ira Haydon on Southwest Boulevard burned to the walls after a late discovery Thursday around ten o clock. The interior was destroyed while J. P. Hall, owner and one room occupant, had its furniture saved. Haydon’s belongings were badly damaged. The house and contents were insured.
The Talk of the Town promotes Charley's Aunt a funny musical comedy at the Grand next Tuesday night. Wentworth Military Academy backs the show aiming to make it a hit of many seasons with laughter singing and chorus. Seats are at Westerman and Rankin's.
The council voted Monday night to turn streets over to Street Fair Co. for the late April or early May event. Merchants largely supported the petition for Redmen use of the streets, urging the public to vent at merchants rather than council members.
Mrs Bennis Sexton arrived Friday evening to visit the family of Wm Parks, then plans to join her husband in Jefferson City where he has accepted a position with the Western Union Telegraph Company.
On March 17, 1916 Mrs Fannie Stonestreet hosted a six o clock dinner at her South Street home in honor of Central College Senior Class. The green and white decor matched school colors as a five course meal followed by a social hour. Ike H. Noyes announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Lafayette County Treasurer. He argues the county’s money has been managed well for two years and urges voters to reelect him for a second term, praising the office’s handling and urging confidence in continuity.
Cadets to be instructed in the use of a new machine gun. Friday received from the war department a new gun with equipment for cadet training. Major R P Palmer of the United States Army will supervise the instruction for further usefulness in military subjects.
A young man, known for excessive bravado, appeared in the police court Tuesday morning and was fined 50 dollars. Unable to pay, he was sent to the coop.
Emil Schenck who ran a garage on Franklin Avenue moved his belongings on Saturday to the Lafayette Garage where he will oversee operations. The former Schenck site on Franklin Avenue has been leased by Beiler Grocery Company of Sedalia, which plans to open a wholesale grocery in the near future.
Mrs W H Chiles visited her daughter Mrs B C Comstock in Kansas City on Wednesday. Miss Pearl Hicklin and sister Mrs H H Harris went to Kansas City on Saturday for a day trip. Mrs Howard Henry and her daughter Virginia returned to Kansas City Friday after visiting Mr and Mrs Oscar Andreen. Mrs Andreen accompanied them home for another visit.
