Voters learned that only the sheriff race remains the sole contest of note as filings closed Friday June 5. Democratic candidates appear for most posts while Republicans lack candidates for surveyor and justice of the peace with several towns fielding no contests.
Tuesday afternoon at three Capt Join Stinner of Wentworth Military academy and Miss Annie Hooten were married at the bride’s grandmother Mrs Sarah Hays home on Aighland avenue. The ceremony by Dr G F Pattillo was simple with only relatives and close friends present. The wedding took place in the room where the bride’s mother was married 28 years ago on the same day and hour. The bride, noted as one of Lexington’s bright and charming young ladies, has lived with her uncle and aunt in Norfolk since infancy and is described as beautiful and capable of becoming a good wife.
Henry Kemner an elderly German citizen of the county died Wednesday evening at his home two and a half miles south of the city from liver trouble after a long illness. He lived most of his life here and on the Dover road before moving to his present home. A member of the local G A R post he was 87 and survived by two sons Hugo and John, his wife having passed away years ago. The body will be taken to Augusta St Charles county for burial.
The criminal court presided by Judge John A Rich began work Wednesday morning with a special grand jury called. The panel includes Ford T Bates Lexington Fore tan. 8 M Reynolds Corder. Ed OBrien and W R Journey Higginville. Charles Bowring Wellington. J W Williamson Bates City. T Sawyer Lexington. J H Bartman and Martin Ehlers Concordia. W W Meng Dover. William Drunert Waverly. Mrs Sarah Russell celebrated her seventy third birthday with a home held country dinner for friends south of town. Guests included Dr and Mrs J F E Tucker Dr and Mrs Frank Carter and son Mr and Mrs M R Rhodes of Odessa Mrs B R Carter Mrs W Webb and Wm Webb of Higginville Mrs T T Strameke Mr and Mrs Walter Reeder.
The Jung teachers examinations will be held at Lexington June 24. The exam day schedule lists reading physiology and civil government in the morning and pedagogy, Aiatory science, advanced history in the afternoon. Clarence Fitzpatrick, Superintendent.
James f h Moorehead Jr hosted an elegant 1 o clock dinner on Sorth Street Tovetay evening for about a dozen boy friends. The dinner was served in courses and praised as delectable in every respect. Afterward guests were taken to the Nickle and the Moorehead hospitality earned high regard from all present. B W Ardinger, recently visiting Mrs Join Blackwell, departed Thursday for Dallas, Texas, with plans to return for a longer visit by his wife.
Mrs Mary Alice Faris wife of Rev A R Faris and mother of nine children died at home 2315 East Nineteenth street on June 11. She had been an invalid for years. The family includes Susie Frances Mary Margaret Charles Louis Paul and Elizabeth Russell. Alfred Faris is in business in St Louis and Nell Faris teaches at William Woods College Fulton Mo. Funeral planned in Marshall Missouri. Her husband once served as pastor of the Lexington Methodist Church.
Sterling Price Chapter U D C held a memorial at Machpelah cemetery to salute Jefferson Davis on his birth centennial. Postponed from the third due to weather, the ceremony featured garlanded Confederate memorial, singing by four young women, prayers by Dr. Geo W Hyde and Dr Pattillo, Mrs Hyde leading remarks, and Dr BE Gordon delivering a defense of Davis against northern obloquy. Children offered wreaths, then a benediction ended the service. Additional society notices list local movements and visits across Independence, Higginville, Kansas City, and nearby towns.
The Old Men’s Club of Lafayette county met at Dover June 1908 in the Baptist church for its semiannual gathering. President J. Frank Campbell led, memorials were read, seven new members joined, and fourteen veterans passed to their reward since September. Dinner, songs, and warm hospitality highlighted the day, with plans to reconvene September 25, 1908 in Higginsville.
John Welsh of Kansas City was in Lexington yesterday. John Dyer and J J Jones spent Thursday in Kansas City. E D Graham returned to Mexico Mo yesterday after a business trip. Mr and Mrs Clarence Kenney and son Wilmot visited Kansas City Thursday evening. Miss Ethel Rose arrived from Kansas City Thursday evening for several days with Miss Nancy Wilson. Miss Bettie Nickerson of Warrensburg and niece Miss Katherine Wilson left Wednesday for a trip to St Louis. The ferry boat under Capt Pick Davis went to Dover yesterday to remove stock from Baltimore bar for Jouette Redd. Mrs J B Lehman, visiting her father Judge J B Burden, left Thursday for St Louis. Dr Frank Davis spent several days with friends here, then left Tuesday for St Louis. Mr and Mrs P W Voigt and daughter Mrs Rosa Kunts left Wednesday for Manitowen Wis. Mrs J H Gatrom and daughter Miss Mattie Lou visited here and returned to Kansas City Wednesday morning. Dr W Predendall took Hubert Longton to St Joseph hospital in Kansas City Thursday with his brother John and Father G B Qurry of the Catholic church.
Missouri River floods widen, surpassing 1904 levels but unlikely to reach 1903 peak. Heavy rains and westward flooding push water over bottom lands from Kansas to Missouri, submerging Egypt and Camden peninsulas, forcing desertion of homes. Levee work near Waterloo progresses to halt rise while boats skim the flooded landscape as carp and other fish swim in crops protected by floodwaters.
The Hirdndingers, held by William Cobb, proved wily foes to the Lexington Elks on the diamond Thursday evening. The Elks finally prevailed 6 to 5 after a hard tussle with Jarboe Terhune delivering peathy work on the ala. Terhune struck out many batters while Sturgis prevented a shutout by scoring in the ninth inning.
