Bound For New Orleans From Omaha High School Boys
A handmade barge with two oars for steering pulled into Lexington ferry landing bound for New Orleans. Howard Roe Wil Roe and Paul McIlvaine, Omaha high school students, built the craft and began July 2 traveling a week via Kansas City. The barge resembled a house boat without its house, covered with canvas in rain or at night. They spent brief stops for provisions and a straw hat each, leaving Lexington at 1:00 p.m. aiming for Jefferson City next.
