Missouri Daughters of the Confederacy seek eyewitness Civil War accounts for a planned book. Mrs G W Hyde says personal experiences fade and urges Thrilling escapes and cruelties be documented for a comprehensive, reliable history. Letters urged to G W Hyde, Lexington Missouri.
Leopold Schmidt died Friday evening at 7 at the home of his son in law C B Noel from Brights disease. Born in Baden Germany August 27 18, he immigrated at age seven with his parents to Missouri. He married Miss Mary Klinghammer and was the father of twelve children, all but one married. A highly esteemed resident who lived near there for many years his services were to be conducted by Dr Ordon from the local church with Mrs Inez and family members accompanying. News notes also reference Le Com visiting, and relatives traveling to Wichita and Kansas City.
The Lexington retail merchants association gained new momentum from an address by C. Lawson, secretary and attorney of the Sedalia group. Chas Lyons introduced Lawson who urged practical steps for Lexington merchants. Attorney Lawson, a charter member, outlined helpful suggestions as Moorehead followed with another strong talk. Several new members joined as the local association plans biweekly meetings on the first and third Thursdays unless payday conflicts.
A large crowd attended the New Grand on Tuesday for the New Grand benefit performance of the pantomime Ginevra. Miss Nadine Steele starred with Lovel played by Wm Aull, and the show featured lively specialties and a May Queen crowning. Proceeds go to the building fund for the Methodist Church South.
Maj. B E A Hickman leaves for Moberly to join superintendents of Missouri military schools. Three schools Hiess Kemper and Wentworth will form a league to schedule football and baseball among themselves, unifying athletics and aiming to determine a state academic championship. The Missouri Military Academy at Mexico declined invitation.
Waverly notes list visits and travel of residents from nearby towns and states. Misa Lula Punk of Marta Beatles visits this week. L E Heath and sister from Wellington came Friday. Mrs Lucy Webb and daughter Jennie Tucker of Butler visit this week. Mrs Claude Capps and Lula return from Milan. Rev C V Shulenberger moves to Richmond Kansas. Lois Walton returns to Kansas City after weeks with her sister. Mrs Cary Davis and daughters with Mrs Kate Pauline visit. Arline Crews marries Gordon Jackson in Independence August 16 1007. Berths Larkin returns from Warrensburg where she attended summer normal. A F Smith leaves for Kansas City and St Louis. Mrs Theodore Luudwiga returns from Topeka. Ethel Saunders leaves for St Joseph and Blackwell. Rev A B Rogers returns from Southwestern Missouri business trip.
Four Wentworth alumni among top officers at the Missouri National Guard encampment in St Joseph, including J A De Armond and Harvey Clark. Cadet Gilbert E Humphrey of El Reno Okla named second lieutenant in the US Army, after ranking sixth in West Point class. Barracks and facilities at Wentworth noted as improved with new assembly hall and expanded mess hall. St Joseph News Press.
A Kansas City man identified as L. L. Inman sought a marriage license at the county clerk's office. Due to lacking proof of age for a Dover girl, the license was denied, prompting a Dover trip. The next morning Miss Kate McQuillen accompanied him to Dover, and they returned to Kansas City with the license, appearing happy.
A flurry of Wednesday and Thursday visits unites Kansas City Wellington Oak Grove and Odessa with locals. Notable events include Capt. Ryland Todhunter in Higginsville on business and a Riverside Park ball clash where Lexington defeated Moberly 8 to 2 as Shinn and Kinkead starred for the Blues.
