Telegram announced the death of John C. Downtain at his home near Boulder Colorado. He was a resident of this city and is survived by two sisters and one brother Mrs W Z Mitchell William Downtain and Mrs T F Keene. The body was brought here for burial.

German Language Discontinued At Trinity Evangelical Church
At a Sunday meeting the Trinity Evangelical church congregation unanimously voted to stop using German in the pulpit, Sunday School, and all church activities. In wartime spirit, members pledged loyalty to the government and explained German as the language of the enemy, justifying the action as a patriotic measure. Pastor Bletbaum announced the decision.

Local man becomes army chaplain in training
Rev. O. R. Sellers son of Col and Mrs Sandford Sellers of this city volunteers and is accepted as a Chaplain in the army. He reported Saturday to a training camp for Chaplains at Louisville Kentucky.
Death by Own Action Near Corder
Mrs. Fred Hartwig aged about 50 on a farm four miles south of Corder committed death by her own action Monday by hanging. She is survived by her husband, one son and one daughter.

Liberty Day Celebration At Court House Friday
Friday afternoon from 2 to 4 o'clock in front of the Court House a Liberty Day event is planned with band, patriotic songs, and a chorus. Subscriptions for the Third Liberty Loan will be taken at booths and an indicator will show progress toward the quota. If reached by 4, bells and whistles may ring. At 8 p.m. Judge Charles M. Hunt of St Paul will speak at the Court House.

Miss Seay’s Recital Opens Central College Year
Miss Mary Grace Seay of Chillicothe Missouri gave the first song recital in Murrell Auditorium as part of Central College’s graduating series on Tuesday evening. Her English French and Italian selections impressed with soprano quality and refined interpretation aided by Miss Richardson piano and Mr Rahm violin. The program featured German works in English translation and a noted Swedish song by Joachim.

Death of George W. Garr in Lafayette County
George W. Garr died Saturday night at 10 30 at his North 16th Street home. Born May 4 1827 in Virginia, he moved west in 1850 and worked as a carpenter near Dover Missouri before Civil War service in Shelby's brigade. He married Mary Slusher on August 29 1865 and later farmed until moving to Lexington twenty seven years ago. A Baptist for seventy years, he endured poor health with his wife caring for him. Survived by wife and three children Mrs Lee J Slusher Mrs Ben Eaton and Willis Garr. Funeral held Monday at 1 30 at his home conducted by Rev Downing and Rev Baxter Waters.

Death of John E Cross at 70 in Lexington
John E Cross died at his home 280219 South Street on Saturday morning after several weeks illness. Born in England April 10, 1848 he was 70 years and 10 days old. He came to America in 1880, settled here in 1881, and moved from Corder to Lexington five years ago. He is survived by his wife and seven children including Mrs Sarah Schooling Lexington and Corporal Charles Cross Camp Mills NY. Funeral was held Tuesday at 2:30 pm. Judge Richard Field presided over the circuit court adjourned session. John Anderson was granted a divorce from Mary Anderson.

Tuesday at Dover Squire Harwood fined a Black man $100 for assault. The man was brought to Lexington and jailed. Charles Meyers and Mrs. William Bartels traveled to Kansas City yesterday due to the serious illness of Samuel L. Meyers.
