Robi L. Dunn of Shoshone County traveled through the city returning from Frazier where he presided over a preliminary trial in the rape case against Douglas Bonner conducted before the local justice.
Nez Perce County Treasurer Hastings asks the county commissioners to bond $50,000 to redeem warrants, build a jail, and improve roads. He proposes a 20 year bond with semi annual payments, a sinking fund, and using interest to reduce rates, while urging strict collection of personal property taxes.
A Lewiston city notes section reports a bid to form Clearwater County by taking parts of Idaho County, amid constitutional $1,000,000 valuation concerns. The measure faces opposition from Idaho legislators and a calendar path through county lines committee with potential compromise unlikely. A letter from the commissioner authorizes filings and proofs on lands along the reservation’s north border previously suspended since 1896 for survey conflicts. Open areas include parts of sections 7 to 12 and 19 to 23 in township 570, 13W, with suspension lifted to settle rights for entry and final proof.
Mrs E W Baughman died Sunday morning after a paralytic stroke on Thursday January 29. Born 1849 in St Louis Missouri, she came to Oregon as a child, married Captain E W Baughman, and lived in Lewiston since 1881. Survived by three children and siblings, funeral held at Episcopal church at 2 p.m. Judge E Steele opened the Idaho county winter term in Grangeville with a heavy docket including several criminal cases.
