Fire Destroys Livery Barn and Threatens Town Center
Early Monday to 2 30 the alarm cut the city to panic as flames leaped from Henry Duncan’s livery barn near Main Street. Firefighters and volunteers fought two water streams against a wood and sheet iron structure, saving the Keller building and others as embers scorched the west edge of town. Fourteen horses and several livestock perished or were recovered, with insurance tallies and salvage noted. Officials call for more water storage, a standing fire corps, and an auxiliary citizen group to aid the department and prevent looting. Origin of the blaze remains undetermined amid incendiary suspicions from a nearby manger fire.
