Superintendent H N Kluckhohn reported the flu not at epidemic stage in Central Franklin and Clark schools with 123 of 1100 absent. Denison and Marcus games were canceled as districts shut or closed due to flu. Westmar College open house postponed. illnesses rise with several students hospitalized.

In Le Mars last days fines were issued in a city case. Keith Donald Schultze of Cornell Iowa paid 20 dollars for failure to control his vehicle. Peter Eisma of Ieo low faced 15 dollars for improper passing. Vernon Knutsen of Shaco California was fined 18 dollars for speeding. Jim Wegs of Estherville paid 30 dollars for night time speeding. Dennis Cooper of Manson Iowa was fined 20 dollars for speeding.
Le Mars district court recessed for noon as jurors review the case of Ira Vail charged with driving while intoxicated after police found a partially filled wine bottle and noted erratic driving near the Eagles Club. State witnesses include Le Mars police, while Drum & Bugle corps members and Eagles Club affiliates are among subpoenaed defense witnesses.
Temperatures in Le Martin have dropped since midnight with a low of 34 degrees this afternoon and a brisk wind making it feel colder. Rainfall totals since Monday reached 7.771 inches, with 1.3 on Monday, 0.22 on Tuesday, and 0.02 on Wednesday. highs were 93 on Monday, 56 on Tuesday, and 55 on Wednesday with lows of 43, 40, and 45 respectively.
Mrs. James Rogers of Le Mars was re elected treasurer at the Sioux City Diocesan Council of Catholic Women second annual convention in Carroll Iowa. Officers include Mrs Mervin Fedder son president and Mrs Wilbur Cac ket Spencer secretary Bishop Mueller opened and urged teenage dating restraint. Principal speaker was Mrs Joseph F P Kennedy of Boston. The convention theme was Faith Without Works is Dead Two thousand women from 24 northwest counties attended.
Open house at Westmar scheduled for Saturday night has been postponed due to illness. Organizers cited flu cases as the reason for canceling the event to prevent crowd gathering and further spread of germs.
Le Mars BE and R church members attended the Midwest Synod Fall meeting at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church Calumet Ha on Oct 9 1957. Attendees included Mrs Herman Becker Jr presenting the church school Mrs Gene Lauters and Miss Lena Gross from the Women's Guilds. The theme was Greater Commitment to Christian Living with panel discussions on Good Samaritan Home Evangelical Hospitals Child Welfare Association Ft Wayne Children's Home Blakes Grove Camp Heifer Project and Winnebago Benevolent Corporation. Large attendance signals rising interest in church work.
A 1950 car driven by Keith Depald Schultze of Cornell Iowa went out of control on highway 3 east of Le Mars. The car hit a telephone pole, rolled, and ended upright. Schultze was fined $20 for failing to keep the vehicle under control after the crash. Passenger Robert Kirkman of Storm Lake was thrown from the car and hospitalized with back and leg injuries. The other passenger escaped injury. The men were REA tree trimmers. fog and speed contributed to the mishap.
Old Barn hosts a two day festival November 1 and 3 with two daily sessions 2 to 3 pm and 7 to 10 pm. Demonstrations and exhibits run each session, focusing on home crafts, holiday ideas and year round projects. Admission 78 cents. student rate available. lunch provided.

A flash fire at the Harry Reynolds Phillips 66 station on 1st St and 1st Ave NW in Le Mars destroyed Dr. Wayne H. Faber’s 1957 Ford and damaged pumps. No injuries were reported as gasoline fumes ignited by a flare, and the fire was quickly extinguished by the Le Mars fire department with help from station workers.
LeRoy Housewirth of South Sioux City Nebraska was fined 50 dollars on two speeding charges in LeMars Mayor's Court after being picked up at Merrill. Police reported two accounts of speeding in a restricted area with alleged motor vehicle law violations and questioned state compliance with Iowa traffic reporting requirements.
About 175 Plymouth County 4-H members seek calves for a summer show at the county fair. Rolland Paul and Tom Wickersham of Iowa State College advise buying light calves around 400 to 450 pounds in fall, aiming for 650 pounds by January 11 weigh-in, and around 30 cents a pound to avoid overpaying. They urge help from experienced cattlemen and club leaders to pick a 400-pound calf with potential to finish as a 1,000 pound steer next summer. Mrs. Louis Petry of Burbank visits Earl Love’s home.
Merrill youths and Cub Scouts visit homes on Halloween from 6 to 7 30 p m to raise funds for UNICEF. Solicitors wear UNICEF IDs and return to Merrill School at 7 30 p m for a Danny Kaye film. Donations range from 2c to 31 00 aiding milk malaria penicillin and leprosy relief.
The Globe-Post offers a Sputnik to readers and a deed to a farm on the moon. The event promises a rust, gas leakage, tire, radio, and meteorite free Sputnik and a lunar land deed to each applicant. The delivery is set for 5 45 PM Friday with a Moon pass over Le Martin around 3 45 PM Friday.
Mr and Mrs Ronnie Miller former Le Mars residents were seriously hurt in a noon Tuesday car train crash in Brookings South Dakota. Miller drove a Plymouth while a freight train struck the car causing multiple injuries. They are listed in fair condition at Brookings Hospital. Mrs Miller worked as a beauty operator in Le Mars and they recently moved to Brookings where he is employed by Stromberg Carlson.
A varsity football game between Le Mars Bulldogs of Central high and Gehlen Jays at West mar athletic field is set for Saturday night at 7 45. Cancellations due to illness affect the Marcus and Denison games previously planned for Thursday and Friday.
William Walker 57 former Le Mars resident died Tuesday from a heart attack at his Cincinnati Ohio home His wife Beulah Walker formerly Beulah White of Le Mars sent the telegraph funeral set for Friday at White funeral home in Cincinnati Deceased was a sanitation engineer with the U S Public Health Service in Cincinnati A chemist he once discovered a powerful explosive from nitrate byproducts tested on the George Remer farm in Le Mars He worked at the Schneider Bowers store before earning his chemistry degree His father M S Walker was an executive in that firm Mr and Mrs Walker were early in death He was a Le Mars High School graduate who left Le Mars about 25 years ago.
