Car explodes after overturning in ditch injuring driver

Esther Marie Schmit, 31, of Hosper was hospitalized at St. Josephs in Sioux City after her car exploded following a ditch overturn south of Hinton on highway 73. She suffered facial and leg injuries but was later released home. Merrill Fire Department and Mayor C. J. Vanderloo aided in rescue.

Good Crop Outlook In Le Mars Area After Light Rain

Harvest crews in Plymouth and Sioux counties faced a likely dip from a light steady rain. Despite optimism fading from bumper crops, corn averages about 50 bushels per acre with some fields near 100. Accident at junction harms two motorists in Friday incident

On Sunday at 1 p.m. George W. Reader of Spencer was rear ended by Ioa Jane Frohwein of Sheldon as Reader slowed for a stop sign at highways 75 and 5. Frohwein’s car sustained $30 damage. Both vehicles were traveling south. Caution urged as children are present near schools.

Rapist Appeals Maximum Sentence In Iowa Case

Forest Grant Moriston of North Sioux City was convicted October 2 by a district court jury of assault with intent to commit rape. Judge George W. Prichard sentenced him to 20 years in the state penitentiary, Moriston's attorney filing an appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court. The charge stemmed from the rape of a Hawarden girl near Stone Park on June 9. Moriston has prior convictions for rape and larceny in Iowa and South Dakota. A Methodist program to engage Boy Scouts in constructive activity was announced for Halloween night by Rev. D L Harbour of Merrill.

Nine-Year-Old Hurt As Train Hits Car Near Le Mars

Bill Stover nine, son of Randall and Mrs. Stover, was hurled 30 feet when a 1957 Ford station wagon was struck by a passenger train at 2:11 p.m. east of Le Mars depot. He lay unconscious, later treated at home then at Sacred Heart hospital for cuts and facial injuries. Authorities said the rear of the car was badly wrecked and no serious internal injuries were found.
