Olson Wittmer daughter weds Merlin Powers in Mt Pleasant

Olson Wittmer of Mt Pleasant Iowa and Merlin Powers of Venice California were quietly married October 3 at the Presbyterian church in Mt Pleasant. Rev Wil son officiated. The ceremony featured a cross and two chrysanthemum bouquets with rings borne by Charlene Obon. The bride wore a brown faille dress and a red velvet hat. the groom a blue and white chrysanthemum boutonniere. A small reception followed in Fellowship hall. The bride plans to teach at Yarmouth high school. the groom serves as Chief Electrician's Mate in the Coast Guard at Astoria Oregon. Estill Lang returned to Long Beach after a 20 day leave with his parents.

Death of Mrs. Anna Streng in Le Mars at 86

Mrs. Anna Streng died October 7 1953 at Sac red Heart hospital aged 86 6 29. Born March ES 1867 in Eison Luxembourg she lived in Le Mars since age 13. Married Otto J Berner December 31 1899 he died 1902. married John Strong in 1920 who also predeceased her. Funeral October 1 1953 at St Josephs Catholic church with Msgr Fisch, burial Calvary. Survived by two sons F Berner Minneapolis and Berner Fort Dodge. two daughters Mrs Orrin Kelly Le Mars and Mrs Wil Fresman Chicago. eight grandchildren four great grandchildren. Preceded in death by nieces and brothers Fred Theodore Mult Durst. Catholic Daughters of America to recite prayer at 12:00 pm Thursday. Member of Catholic Daughters and Christian Mothers Society. Remsen Farmer John Maass Dies After Illness

Funeral services were held Sunday for John C Maass 58 prominent retired farmer who died Friday at Sacred Heart hospital Le Mars after a heart attack. Born December 8 1894 south of Remsen he married Ella Seel in 1919 and farmed before retiring to Remsen in 1945. He served in World War I and was active in Christ Lutheran church and veterans groups. Survivors include six children six grandchildren a sister three brothers and a half brother. Burial with military honors followed at Remsen cemetery.

About 165 or 170 people attended the merchant farmer annual dinner at Le Mars Country Club with Carl Schelin presiding. Kenneth Thatcher of the Iowa Farm Bureau urged closer, independent farmer groups and cautioned that government parity payments do not alone ensure prosperity. He warned against relying on business leaders or labor to solve farmers' problems and cited trade and price negotiation examples, stressing common sense and free world trade for prosperity. The event closed with a long informal talk session among guests.
